About the Role

The Grassroots Manager role at the American Cancer Society is a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families. This position is responsible for planning and executing a comprehensive grassroots advocacy program across an assigned geography, with a focus on developing and implementing strategies to support evidence-based policy and legislative solutions. What You Will Do

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive grassroots advocacy program across an assigned geography
  • Build and maintain relationships with community-based organizations, volunteers, and stakeholders
  • Identify and develop volunteers with personal stories related to ACS CAN's policy campaigns
  • Plan and manage Cancer Action lobby days or similar events to drive engagement and policy wins
  • Write and disseminate e-mails to volunteers, legislative alerts, issue talking points, and training curriculum for a diverse audience of volunteers
  • Maintain ACS CAN web pages, Facebook pages, and/or other social media accounts according to organizational guidelines and standards
  • Coordinate campaign activities with national teams to execute a grassroots strategy
  • Communicate strategically using messages that are tailored to specific political environments and attuned to the rapid pace of legislative activities
  • Develop and implement a state diversity and inclusion plan that enhances the reach and overall grassroots strength of the organization
  • Find and utilize diverse cancer patients, caregivers, and other stakeholder stories that help drive policies to address disparities and other health equity concerns

What We Are Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience in grassroots advocacy, community development, or a related field
  • Strong skills in volunteer management, including recruitment, training, and retention
  • Experience with Salesforce and Excel
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Strong understanding of health equity and the need to elevate community voices in policy-making
  • Experience with social media management and content creation

Nice to Have

  • Experience with lobbying or advocacy at the state or federal level
  • Knowledge of cancer policy and advocacy issues
  • Experience with event planning and management
  • Familiarity with direct-action organizing principles
  • Certification in a related field, such as non-profit management or public health
