About the Role
The Hardware Architecture Expert role at Openai is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of AI infrastructure development. As a key member of the Hardware organization, you will engage directly with silicon vendors to guide hardware decisions and ensure that next-generation AI systems meet the needs of Openai's workloads. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve evaluating architectural tradeoffs, analyzing performance characteristics, and translating vendor specifications into real-world workload impact.The Hardware organization at Openai collaborates closely with research, software, and external hardware partners to design and deploy AI systems at scale. As a Hardware Architecture Expert, you will work closely with internal teams, including performance modeling and system architecture teams, to align measured vs. modeled behavior and provide actionable feedback to vendors.
What You Will Do
- Engage deeply with silicon vendors on GPU and accelerator architecture tradeoffs
- Analyze and interpret performance, power, and efficiency characteristics of next-generation hardware
- Translate vendor specifications into expected real-world performance for AI workloads
- Evaluate architectural aspects, including compute throughput and utilization, memory systems, and interconnect and scaling behavior
- Run benchmarks and profiling to validate hardware performance against workload requirements
- Lead early bring-up and evaluation of engineering sample silicon
- Partner with internal teams to align measured vs. modeled behavior and provide feedback to vendors
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with silicon vendors and internal stakeholders
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and trends in AI infrastructure
What We Are Looking For
- Deep expertise in GPU or accelerator architecture, including performance and power tradeoffs
- Understanding of AI workload behavior and its interaction with hardware design choices
- Experience engaging directly with silicon vendors at a technical architecture level
- Hands-on experience with benchmarking, profiling, and performance analysis
- Ability to translate low-level hardware details into system-level and workload-level impact
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with internal teams and external partners
- Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex technical issues
Nice to Have
- Experience working with or at companies like NVIDIA or AMD, or similar silicon providers
- Familiarity with AI accelerator stacks, including GPUs, custom ASICs, or emerging architectures
- Experience with early silicon bring-up or hardware validation workflows
- Strong understanding of memory systems and data movement bottlenecks
- Experience with performance tooling, microbenchmarks, and workload characterization
