Job Description

About the Role

The Head of Data at BetterSleep is a pivotal role that will own and evolve the entire data function at the company. This includes managing a team of data scientists, overseeing the data infrastructure roadmap, and serving as a strategic data partner to product, growth, and executive leadership. The successful candidate will have a unique blend of technical skills, business acumen, and leadership abilities.

As the company continues to grow and expand its reach, the need for a robust data foundation has become increasingly important. The data team at BetterSleep has been rebuilt with a platform-first mindset, focusing on stable pipelines, reliable definitions, self-service tooling, and governance that enables the entire organization to move faster. The Head of Data will inherit this momentum and lead the next phase of the build.

The role will involve working closely with the product, growth, and executive teams to drive business decisions with data. This will include developing and implementing data-driven strategies, building and maintaining data pipelines, and creating self-service data products that reduce ad hoc requests.

What You Will Do

  • Own the architecture and reliability of the UA data pipeline, including BigQuery, dbt, Jenkins, AppsFlyer/SKAN attribution, and downstream dashboards
  • Drive the migration of remaining Python transformation scripts into dbt, establish CI/CD, testing standards, and dev/prod environment hygiene
  • Partner with engineering on the ingestion layer, including ad platform APIs, Firebase, and custom subscription backend webhooks
  • Evaluate and introduce new tooling when necessary, defaulting to a simple stack
  • Own the definitions, logic, and reliability of core metrics, including installs, trials, trial-to-paid, RPP, ROAS, CAC, LTV, and churn
  • Lead attribution methodology, including MMP, SKAN 4, and SSOT deduplication
  • Support the experimentation program, including designing tests, validating results, and building statistical muscle
  • Build self-service data products, including AI-powered tooling, to reduce ad hoc requests
  • Own product analytics instrumentation strategy, event taxonomy, Mixpanel governance, and Firebase event schema
  • Translate product analytics into actionable insights for PMs, including retention curves, funnel analysis, feature adoption, and onboarding optimization
  • Manage and develop a team of data scientists, making hiring decisions as needed
  • Partner closely with the UA Manager, Growth PM, and Head of Product as the data team's primary business-facing contact

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in a data leadership role, preferably in a growth-stage company
  • Strong technical skills, including expertise in BigQuery, dbt, and AppsFlyer
  • Experience with data governance, including establishing and maintaining data pipelines, and ensuring data quality
  • Strong understanding of attribution methodology, including MMP and SKAN
  • Experience with building and maintaining data warehouses, including Mixpanel and Firebase
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas simply
  • Experience managing and developing a team of data scientists
  • Strong business acumen, with the ability to drive business decisions with data

  • Experience with AI-powered tooling, including natural language querying and automated anomaly detection
  • Experience with building and maintaining experimentation infrastructure, including A/B testing platforms
  • Experience with statistical significance frameworks and building statistical muscle
  • Experience with partner closely with cross-functional teams, including product, growth, and executive leadership
