Job Description
About the Role
The Head of SOX and Internal Controls will own and strengthen Coinbase's internal control framework across all entities and processes. As a key member of the Accounting team within Finance, this role ensures the company maintains a robust and scalable framework. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of SOX 404, PCAOB standards, and the COSO framework.The role entails leading the annual SOX risk assessment, designing and implementing key business controls, and partnering with various teams to embed effective controls. The Head of SOX and Internal Controls will also drive timely remediation of control deficiencies and execute regular SOX status reporting to senior leadership.
What You Will Do
- Own the enterprise SOX business process control framework, including scoping, risk assessment, and control design standards
- Lead the annual SOX risk assessment, materiality determinations, and end-to-end design and implementation of key and non-key business controls
- Partner with Finance, Accounting, Operations, Product, Engineering, Risk, and Internal Audit to protect the integrity of financial reporting
- Drive timely remediation of control deficiencies by designing and implementing sustainable corrective actions
- Build scalable control automation and data-driven monitoring capabilities
- Execute regular SOX status reporting to senior leadership
- Establish governance forums, training, playbooks, and guidance for control owners and process owners
- Utilize generative AI responsibly to maintain and improve internal controls
What We Are Looking For
- 13+ years of progressive experience in SOX, internal controls, internal audit, or risk management
- 6+ years of people management experience
- Deep technical knowledge of SOX 404, PCAOB standards, and the COSO framework
- Professional certification such as CPA, CA, CIA, CISA, or CRMA
- Track record of influencing senior leaders and driving cross-functional initiatives
- Proficiency with ERP systems, workflow tools, and control automation technologies
- Experience managing SOX in multi-entity or multi-jurisdictional environments
Nice to Have
- Experience with digital asset safeguarding and revenue recognition
- Knowledge of financial reporting and procurement processes
- Familiarity with RPA, data analytics, and continuous control monitoring
- Certification in a relevant field, such as CFE or CCEP
