About the Role

The Human Rights & Responsible Deployment Lead will play a critical role in ensuring Openai's technologies are deployed responsibly, particularly in national security contexts. This involves collaborating with various teams, including research, policy, and product, to integrate human rights considerations into AI development and deployment. The role is based in Washington, DC, and requires a deep understanding of both technology and human rights.

As part of the Openai for Government team, the Human Rights & Responsible Deployment Lead will work closely with government institutions to support the responsible adoption of AI across defense, intelligence, and civilian agencies. This role is at the center of Openai's most complex and high-stakes decisions, requiring a unique blend of technical expertise, policy knowledge, and human rights acumen.

What You Will Do

  • Develop clear criteria and frameworks to guide decision-making on high-risk national security use cases
  • Assess risks associated with proposed deployments and identify mitigation strategies
  • Collaborate with research and product teams to integrate human rights considerations into AI development
  • Support the development of systems and safeguards that enable models to recognize and respond to high-risk or rights-sensitive use cases
  • Convene external experts to stress test model capabilities and real-world deployment scenarios
  • Build and maintain relationships with human rights organizations, multilateral institutions, and expert communities
  • Represent Openai in external engagements related to human rights and responsible AI deployment
  • Facilitate dialogue with stakeholders to understand concerns and expectations
  • Provide input on key external communications, publications, and policy positions to ensure alignment with human rights principles
  • Help establish frameworks for monitoring the real-world human rights impacts of deployed AI systems

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in human rights, international law, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of AI and its applications in national security contexts
  • Experience working with government institutions, human rights organizations, or other relevant stakeholders
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and strategically
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams
  • Experience with risk assessment and mitigation strategies
