About the Role

The Income Tax Technical Accounting Lead is a senior individual contributor role within the Global Tax function at Driven Brands, reporting directly to the Director of Income Tax. This position serves as the department's in-house technical authority on U.S. federal, multi-state, and Canadian income tax accounting matters. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of ASC 740 and a proven track record of managing complex tax accounting issues.

As part of the Global Tax team, the Income Tax Technical Accounting Lead will be responsible for providing technical guidance and support on all income tax accounting matters. This includes quarterly provision issue analysis and documentation, technical tax research, and written work product. The role also involves collaborating with various teams, including Corporate Accounting, FP&A, Legal, and Corporate Development, to analyze the income tax accounting implications of business events.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert supporting the Director of Income Tax on all ASC 740 income tax provision matters each quarter and at year-end.
  • Identify, analyze, and document significant income tax accounting issues arising each quarter, including changes in facts, tax law developments, uncertain tax position (UTP) activity, valuation allowance considerations, and return-to-provision adjustments.
  • Prepare a formal issue memo each reporting period, detailing the analysis and recommendations for addressing identified issues.
  • Analyze and document deferred tax asset and liability movements, including the adequacy of valuation allowances, using the more-likely-than-not framework under ASC 740-10.
  • Assess and document the financial statement impact of significant transactions, business combinations, restructurings, and legislative changes under ASC 740.
  • Provide written conclusions to the Director and VP of Global Tax on complex income tax accounting positions.
  • Support external auditor (Big 4) review of the provision by preparing clear, audit-ready technical documentation and responding to technical inquiries on complex income tax accounting positions.
  • Research complex federal, multi-state, and Canadian income tax issues that arise in connection with the provision.
  • Monitor U.S. and Canadian income tax legislative and regulatory developments and deliver timely written assessments of the ASC 740 impact to leadership.

What We Are Looking For

  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in income tax accounting, preferably in a similar role within a large corporation or public accounting firm.
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. federal, multi-state, and Canadian income tax laws and regulations.
  • Strong understanding of ASC 740 and its application in financial reporting.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to produce well-reasoned written work product.
  • Experience with financial statement analysis and the ability to assess the financial statement impact of tax accounting issues.
  • Collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in Excel and other financial analysis tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and develop creative solutions.
