About the Role
The Inpatient Coder 3 position at Wellstar Health System is a critical role that requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. As a member of the coding team, you will be responsible for reviewing medical records, assigning ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes, and managing coding responsibilities. This role is an excellent opportunity for experienced coders to join a reputable healthcare organization and contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care.In this role, you will be working closely with the Supervisor of Coding and other members of the healthcare team to ensure that medical records are accurately coded and abstracted. Your expertise in ICD-10-CM coding will be essential in assigning the most accurate DRG/APC and ensuring that patient demographic data is accurately abstracted.

What You Will Do
- Review medical records to assign ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes and ICD-10-PCS/CPT-4 HCPCS procedural codes
- Abstract demographic and coding information accurately and completely
- Assign the most accurate DRG/APC and ensure that patient demographic data is accurately abstracted
- Manage coding responsibilities, including resolving coding edits and reminders
- Complete and route problem accounts, ready to code, high dollar, and other accounts daily
- Assist with cleaning up or escalating missing documentation or other work queues
- Serve as a mentor to new coders and assist with training and education
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to ensure high-quality coding and abstracting
- Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to ensure that medical records are accurately coded and abstracted
- Meet productivity standards and maintain a high level of accuracy in coding and abstracting
What We Are Looking For
- Minimum 3 years of acute care inpatient and/or IVR coding experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Certification in coding, such as CCS, RHIA, or RHIT, is required
- Demonstrated maintenance of a high level of accuracy in abstracting, coding, and DRG assignment
- Ability to work in a remote environment and manage multiple tasks and priorities
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to use Microsoft Excel and other software applications
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain a high level of accuracy
Nice to Have
- Experience with observation, same day surgery, outpatient, and emergency coding
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMRs)
- Certification in a specialized area of coding, such as CPC or COC
