About the Role

The Inpatient Coder Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring the accurate and efficient coding of inpatient records. This position will be responsible for reviewing complex inpatient documentation, assigning diagnosis and procedure codes, and ensuring compliance with federal and insurance regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of ICD-10 CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines, as well as experience with electronic medical records (EMRs) and computer-assisted coding software.

The Inpatient Coder Specialist will work closely with the Clinical Documentation Improvement and Quality teams to ensure accurate coding and reimbursement. This role will also involve collaborating with clinical teams to provide education and support on coding-related topics. The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert in inpatient coding and will be responsible for maintaining up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines and regulations.

What You Will Do

  • Review complex inpatient documentation to assign diagnosis and procedure codes
  • Ensure compliance with federal and insurance regulations
  • Utilize EMRs and computer-assisted coding software to assign and sequence codes
  • Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement and Quality teams to ensure accurate coding
  • Provide education and support to clinical teams on coding-related topics
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines and regulations
  • Participate in payer audits and meetings as a resource for coding-related audits
  • Attend meetings with clinical teams regarding updates in codes for complex specialties
  • Maintain the confidentiality of patient records
  • Report any perceived non-compliant practices to the coding leader or compliance officer
  • Meet and exceed departmental quality and productivity standards

What We Are Looking For

  • Coding certification issued by the American Academy of Coders (AAPC) or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Associate's degree in Health Information Management or a related field
  • Typically requires 7 years of experience in inpatient coding in an acute care tertiary facility
  • Advanced proficiency in ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Epic Systems or other EMRs
  • Knowledge of query guidelines and coding standards
  • Experience with computer-assisted coding software
  • Certification in a specialized area of coding, such as pediatrics or oncology
