Job Description

About the Role

The Instructional Designer will play a vital role in supporting the development and redevelopment of online courses at Bluefield University. This part-time, remote-eligible position will work closely with Subject Matter Experts to build high-quality, engaging learning experiences within the Canvas LMS. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all course components align with the university's pedagogical standards, accessibility requirements, and Christ-centered mission.

As a key member of the instructional design team, the Instructional Designer will collaborate with faculty and staff to translate academic content into effective online learning modules. This will involve building, updating, and refining course shells in Canvas, as well as integrating multimedia elements to enhance student engagement. The Instructional Designer will also be responsible for migrating legacy course content into updated formats that meet current university procedures.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of instructional design principles and adult learning theory, as well as experience working with digital media tools and the Canvas LMS. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential, as the Instructional Designer will be working closely with faculty and staff to develop high-quality online courses.

What You Will Do

  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts to develop online courses that meet the university's pedagogical standards and accessibility requirements
  • Build, update, and refine course shells in Canvas to ensure consistent use of university templates and navigation standards
  • Integrate multimedia elements, such as video, interactive graphics, and digital assessments, to enhance student engagement
  • Assist in the migration of legacy course content into updated formats that meet current university procedures
  • Ensure that all developed courses adhere to established university instructional design standards and quality rubrics
  • Verify that all course materials meet ADA Section 508 and WCAG accessibility requirements
  • Maintain institutional branding and aesthetic consistency across all assigned course projects
  • Participate in regular project check-ins with the Director of Instructional Design to report on development milestones
  • Provide technical guidance to SMEs on the capabilities and best practices of the Canvas LMS
  • Support the quality assurance process by identifying and correcting broken links, formatting errors, or navigation hurdles before course launch

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience developing online courses, specifically within the Canvas LMS
  • Strong understanding of instructional design principles and adult learning theory
  • Proficiency with digital media tools, such as Canva, Camtasia, or Articulate
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office 365
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a virtual environment and leverage digital tools to enhance student engagement
  • Commitment to the Christian purpose and mission of Bluefield University

Nice to Have

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Experience working in a higher education environment, particularly within a faith-based institution
