About the Role
The Intermediate Backend Engineer role at GitLab is a unique opportunity to work on the AI Governance team, building features that enable regulated enterprise organizations to audit, govern, and demonstrate compliance for AI agent usage. This role is critical to GitLab's success, as it directly impacts the company's ability to provide secure and compliant solutions to its customers. The AI Governance team is a small, tight-knit group with clear product direction and technical guidance from experienced backend engineers.As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you will be responsible for implementing well-scoped backend features, building and maintaining automated test coverage, and growing your knowledge of AI governance and related product architecture. You will work closely with senior and staff engineers to deliver solutions that are reliable, maintainable, and aligned with the product direction and release goals.
The AI Governance team is part of GitLab's larger effort to provide a comprehensive platform for DevSecOps, enabling organizations to increase developer productivity, improve operational efficiency, and reduce security and compliance risk. As a member of this team, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional partners and nearby engineering teams working on related governance and AI capabilities.
What You Will Do
- Implement well-scoped backend features across the AI Governance product area, including event normalization utilities, storage layer enhancements, API endpoint additions, export support, and registry integrations
- Build and maintain automated test coverage for your work using RSpec or equivalent tools to improve reliability and support safe, consistent releases
- Grow your knowledge of AI governance, agent-related product architecture, and integration patterns through hands-on delivery and teamwork
- Work closely with senior and staff engineers to deliver solutions that are reliable, maintainable, and aligned with the product direction and release goals
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners and nearby engineering teams working on related governance and AI capabilities
- Take ownership of your scoped work and deliver with a high level of follow-through in a fast-moving product area
- Close tasks with clear status updates and consistent execution
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies in AI governance and related fields
What We Are Looking For
- Demonstrated backend development experience building and shipping production features
- Proficiency with Ruby on Rails and solid fundamentals in PostgreSQL
- Experience building and maintaining automated test coverage with RSpec or an equivalent testing framework
- Experience communicating clearly in writing with teammates in an async environment
- Demonstrated ability to drive scoped work through completion and follow through on commitments
- Experience with, or exposure to, audit event logging and compliance frameworks
- Strong understanding of software development principles, including testing, validation, and deployment
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and version control systems like Git
Nice to Have
- Experience with AI and machine learning technologies
- Knowledge of cloud-based infrastructure and containerization using Docker
- Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks, such as SOC 2 or HIPAA
- Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
