About the Role

The Intermediate Site Reliability Engineer will play a critical role in optimizing Gitlab's cloud infrastructure, focusing on cloud cost utilization. This position sits at the intersection of engineering and financial accountability, requiring strong technical skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for building and improving systems, standards, and workflows that help teams understand the real cost of the services they run.

As a key member of the Site Reliability Engineering team, the Intermediate SRE will work through technical and organizational ambiguity, connecting infrastructure data with business context, and helping teams act on cost signals with confidence. This role requires a strong systems thinking approach, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to build practical solutions in an all-remote, asynchronous, and values-driven environment.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and improve cloud billing data pipelines to normalize multi-cloud cost data using the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS)
  • Improve cloud resource tagging and labeling standards to enable teams to understand spend by service, environment, and ownership
  • Build cost anomaly detection, forecasting, and alerting workflows to provide teams with timely insight into infrastructure usage
  • Extend observability systems to include cost signals alongside reliability and operational data
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Finance, and Product teams to improve how cloud usage is tracked, attributed, and optimized across Gitlab
  • Develop and maintain tooling to support better decision-making across AWS and GCP
  • Work with teams to understand the real cost of the services they run and provide actionable insights to optimize spending
  • Develop and implement resource tagging and labeling approaches to improve cloud cost visibility
  • Create and maintain documentation of cloud cost management processes and procedures

What We Are Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience in a Site Reliability Engineering role, with a focus on cloud infrastructure and cost optimization
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in GTM and Adjust
  • Experience with cloud providers, including AWS and GCP
  • Strong understanding of cloud cost management principles and practices
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Finance, and Product
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization tools, such as Tableau or Power BI
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work through technical and organizational ambiguity
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems, such as Git

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud cost management tools, such as Cloudability or ParkMyCloud
  • Knowledge of FinOps principles and practices
  • Experience with machine learning or artificial intelligence applications in cloud cost optimization
  • Certification in cloud computing, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Google Cloud Certified - Professional Cloud Developer
