About the Role

The Lead Product Manager, Safety role at the Wikimedia Foundation is a critical position that requires a unique blend of product development expertise, technical knowledge, and community management skills. As a leader in the Product Safety and Integrity team, you will be responsible for overseeing the development of new products, features, and technical interventions that enhance the safety and security of Wikipedia and its users. You will work closely with a cross-functional team of engineers, designers, data scientists, and community managers to drive the strategy and implementation of safety and security initiatives.

The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects. Its mission is to empower people around the world to share and access knowledge. The Product Safety and Integrity team plays a vital role in achieving this mission by protecting Wikipedia's users and contributors from harm and ensuring the integrity of the platform.

As a Lead Product Manager, Safety, you will report to the Group Product Manager, Safety and Security, and will be responsible for guiding the development of products and features that make it hard and expensive for bad actors to undermine the security and privacy guarantees made to users.

What You Will Do

  • Identify the right problems to solve and guide the team to where it will have the highest impact
  • Lead the development of new products, features, and technical interventions that enhance safety and security
  • Drive a cross-functional team to iteratively create and deploy changes
  • Drive product planning and feature prioritization with a focus on user impact
  • Proactively seek ideas and feedback from user communities before and throughout product development
  • Maintain strong and candid relationships with user communities on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation and the Product Safety and Integrity team
  • Stay up-to-date with current technologies and developments in online safety, security, and privacy
  • Analyze data to drive measurable solutions and inform product decisions
  • Collaborate with other teams, such as engineering, design, and community management, to ensure alignment and effective implementation of safety and security initiatives
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the needs and concerns of Wikipedia's users and contributors

What We Are Looking For

  • At least 5 years of professional experience with product development, including agile development experience
  • Experience working directly with online communities, especially public ones
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage a diverse range of responsibilities in a dynamic and results-oriented environment
  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation
  • Ability to be decisive and expeditious despite a complex set of stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of online safety, security, and privacy principles
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including engineering, design, and community management
  • Ability to communicate strategically but candidly in public and private settings

  • Experience working directly in online security and privacy
  • Background in software engineering or applied information security
  • Experience with machine learning and AI technologies
