Job Description

About the Role

The Learning & Development Specialist at HealthCorps plays a pivotal role in connecting curriculum design with program delivery, ensuring that the organization's health education content is effectively delivered to students by college mentors. This role is at the heart of HealthCorps' mission to improve lives by addressing health challenges in communities. The specialist will own the mentor training and development experience, collaborating across departments to ensure a best-in-class experience. Reporting to the Manager of Mentor Experience, the Learning & Development Specialist will partner closely with the curriculum, program, and evaluation teams.

HealthCorps' model is grounded in near-peer mentorship, where college-age mentors are deployed into schools to connect with students. The organization's values of being mission-obsessed, having an entrepreneurial mindset, valuing people as power, believing in teamwork, and empowering change are central to its work. The Learning & Development Specialist will embody these values in their work, focusing on developing mentors who can inspire teens to become change agents within their families, schools, and neighborhoods.

The role involves working in a dynamic environment, where flexibility and adaptability are crucial. The specialist will need to understand the nuances of working with mentors in both classroom and club-based settings and develop training programs that account for these differences.

What You Will Do

  • Design and deliver onboarding programs for mentors that prepare them for various settings and help them engage students across different ages.
  • Develop ongoing professional development opportunities, including office hours, live monthly sessions, and coaching check-ins, to support mentors in delivering the program with growing ease and mastery.
  • Create practical, mentor-ready resources such as videos, how-to guides, templates, and quick-reference sheets tailored to how mentors work.
  • Partner with the curriculum team to review new lesson plans and activities before rollout, providing feedback on clarity, supplies needed, and feasibility within a 60-minute period.
  • Translate curriculum into mentor-ready training, turning lesson plans into actionable guides for mentors.
  • Collaborate with Regional Program Managers to provide training tools and support local mentor supervision.
  • Work with the data team to understand what's working and areas for improvement in mentor training and program delivery.
  • Coach mentors to be confident, skilled facilitators of the curriculum and build their fluency in program administration.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the program's goals, objectives, and outcomes to inform mentor training and development.
