About the Role
Gusto is seeking a skilled Legal AI Engineer to work on a fixed-term contract, focusing on building and implementing foundational AI infrastructure for its legal team. This is a unique opportunity to design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Gusto's legal operations. As a key member of the team, you will work closely with the Senior Manager of Legal Contracting Operations & AI Systems to identify areas where AI can add value and develop tailored solutions to meet the team's needs.The legal team at Gusto is already leveraging AI tooling and infrastructure through Claude, and your role will be to take these efforts to the next level by creating scalable, maintainable, and integrated systems. Your expertise in AI engineering and legal operations will enable you to translate complex legal requirements into technical solutions, ensuring seamless collaboration between legal, legal ops, and cross-functional stakeholders.
What You Will Do
- Design and develop AI-powered workflows that are fast, measurable, and safe, based on specifications from legal, legal ops, and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Connect the AI stack by packaging individual team members' skills, workflows, and dashboards into shared, maintainable assets.
- Wire together current AI tooling, including building MCP integrations to streamline data flow and minimize manual handoffs.
- Engage with Gusto's AIT team to establish connections where native integrations do not exist.
- Stand up a structured, queryable knowledge layer that can be searched by any team member and invoked by automated workflows.
- Implement AI-assisted workflows for high-volume use cases, such as contract first-pass review, matter intake and routing, and litigation operations.
- Deliver a maintenance runbook for every system built and train designated team members on administration.
- Establish documented systems and run books to ensure the team can maintain and evolve what you've built.
- Collaborate with the legal team to identify areas for process improvement and develop AI-driven solutions to address these needs.
- Work with cross-functional stakeholders to integrate AI solutions with existing workflows and systems.

- Proven experience in AI engineering, preferably in a legal or related field.
- Strong understanding of AI technologies and their applications in legal operations.

- Experience working with AI tooling and infrastructure, such as Claude.

- Strong documentation and maintenance skills, with the ability to create and deliver high-quality documentation and training materials.
