About the Role
The Legal Fellow role at Wikimedia offers a unique opportunity to work on a wide range of legal issues, from complex copyright questions to international freedom of expression. As a fellow, you will be assigned challenging projects based on your interests and strengths, and will work closely with an attorney from the Legal Department. This role is perfect for law students or recent graduates looking to gain in-house experience and apply their skills in a real-world setting.The Wikimedia Foundation faces a myriad of legal issues, and as a Legal Fellow, you will be at the forefront of addressing these challenges. You will have the opportunity to work on projects that align with your interests, whether it's researching legal questions, drafting licensing agreements, or developing internal and external policies.

What You Will Do
- Research various legal questions and provide analysis and recommendations to the Legal Department
- Draft licensing agreements and other legal documents
- Develop internal and external policies on issues related to internet law and free knowledge
- Collaborate with other teams, including the Communications and Product departments
- Attend and participate in internal and external meetings, including meetings with external counsel and partners
- Assist in the development of training materials and presentations on legal issues
- Work closely with the Legal Department to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
- Conduct legal research and analysis on issues related to copyright, freedom of expression, and data protection
- Assist in the review and negotiation of contracts and agreements
What We Are Looking For
- Current law student or recent law school graduate
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple projects
- Experience working with large online user communities (or at least the desire to)
- Intellectual curiosity and flexibility, with the ability to tackle difficult and ambiguous problems
- Completed coursework in areas of law such as internet law, freedom of expression, intellectual property, contract drafting, international law, privacy, data security, and/or licensing
- Experience with wikis or Wikimedia projects is a plus
Nice to Have
- Experience working in a nonprofit or technology organization
- Familiarity with Creative Commons licensing and open-source software
- Multilingual candidates are a plus
- Experience with project management tools and software
