About the Role
The Litigation Attorney position at The Hanover Insurance Group is a critical part of the company's Staff Counsel organization, focusing on the defense of automobile and general liability personal injury cases. This role entails managing a caseload from inception to resolution, which may include settlement, trial, or dismissal. The successful candidate will work closely with a team of attorneys, paralegals, and support staff to achieve the goals of the Staff Counsel organization.As a key member of the team, the Litigation Attorney will engage in all facets of litigation, including preparing and responding to legal documents, conducting discovery, and attending court hearings, depositions, and settlement conferences. The ability to work independently while being part of a collaborative team is essential, as is the capacity to communicate effectively with clients, claims professionals, and other stakeholders.

What You Will Do
- Handle the defense of automobile and general liability personal injury cases from receipt to conclusion
- Prepare responsive pleadings, issue and respond to written discovery, and engage in all facets of litigation
- Conduct legal research to evaluate cases in terms of liability, damages, and exposure
- Communicate regularly and timely with clients and claims professionals to discuss case status and resolution strategies
- Proactively move cases forward toward resolution
- Participate in roundtable discussions of cases with Staff Counsel managers, Claims managers, and other professionals
- Negotiate settlements and prepare settlement agreements
- Work collaboratively with other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff to achieve organizational goals
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay updated on legal practices and industry trends
- Manage a caseload effectively, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines
What We Are Looking For
- Admission in good standing to the Massachusetts Bar
- Experience litigating automobile, general liability, and Personal Injury Protection claims
- Strong knowledge of litigation practices, including discovery, depositions, and trial procedures
- Excellent negotiation skills and the ability to influence claim outcomes
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate legal language into layman's terms
- Decision-making skills, with the ability to arrive at determinations in complex legal situations
- Organizational skills, with the ability to categorize and prioritize work effectively
- Proficiency in computer literacy, including MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, and email management
- Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with other attorneys, adjusters, claims professionals, and support staff
