About the Role
As a Marine Pilot at Buckeye Partners, you will be responsible for guiding ships safely into and out of port, ensuring the safe navigation, mooring, and unmooring of vessels. This role requires a high level of expertise in navigation, communication, and problem-solving, as well as the ability to work well under pressure. You will be part of a team that is committed to providing world-class service to meet the evolving energy needs of customers and communities.The Marine Pilot role is extremely diverse and will take place in a variety of weather conditions and on a 24/7 basis. You will be required to develop specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, water depths, tides, currents, and hazards, and to use this knowledge to make informed decisions about ship movements.
What You Will Do
- Consult maps, charts, weather reports, and navigation equipment to determine and direct ship movements
- Develop and maintain specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, water depths, tides, currents, and hazards
- Steer ships into and out of berths, or signal tugboat captains to berth and unberth ships under senior pilot teaching and supervision
- Maintain vessel's records, logs, and inventories
- Serve as a vessel's docking master upon arrival at a port and when at a berth under senior pilot supervision
- Operate ship-to-shore radios to exchange information needed for ship operations
- Perform other functions as directed by senior pilots or management
- Collaborate with other pilots and marine personnel to ensure safe and efficient port operations
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date with industry developments and best practices
- Contribute to the development of procedures and guidelines for marine operations
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited US Maritime Academy
- 3-5 years of related experience in general pilotage
- General knowledge or experience in marine terminal operations
- US Coast Guard Certification
- License 1 to berth ships up to 70,000 DWT
- License 2 to berth ships up to 115,000 DWT
- License 3 to berth ships up to 170,000 DWT
- License 4 to berth ships up to 300,000 DWT
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and in a team environment
- Basic business aptitude and an entrepreneurial mindset
- Mechanical aptitude, computer skills, and hand tool experience
- Ability to train and mentor Pilot Trainees
Nice to Have
- Experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
- Knowledge of maritime regulations and industry standards
- Experience with ship simulation software or other marine navigation tools
- Certification in a related field, such as navigation or marine engineering
