About the Role
The Medical Director role at Allstate is a senior position that requires a high level of clinical expertise, strategic vision, and leadership skills. As a Medical Director, you will be responsible for providing clinical oversight and governance for the medical review program, including appeals, rescission, and grievance panel processes. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including legal, product, and actuarial teams, to drive medical management innovation and advance the company's goals.The Medical Director will be responsible for conducting comprehensive clinical reviews, evaluating complex medical cases, and providing expert clinical judgment in high-risk or sensitive determinations. You will also lead clinical evaluation and decision-making for rescission cases and member grievances, ensuring that all decisions are made in accordance with policy provisions, clinical guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
What You Will Do
- Provide clinical oversight and governance for the medical review program, including appeals, rescission, and grievance panel processes
- Conduct comprehensive clinical reviews for first and second-level appeals, including Department of Insurance (DOI) complaints
- Evaluate complex medical cases to ensure consistency with policy provisions, clinical guidelines, and regulatory requirements
- Provide expert clinical judgment in high-risk or sensitive determinations
- Lead clinical evaluation and decision-making for rescission cases and member grievances
- Ensure appropriate application of underwriting intent and policy interpretation in misrepresentation reviews
- Partner with legal on complex or escalated cases
- Partner with legal to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal requirements governing adverse benefit determinations, grievance processes, and clinical review standards
- Document clinical rationale supporting determinations in a manner suitable for regulatory review, audits, and litigation
- Identify opportunities to improve upstream underwriting and risk selection practices
- Support quality assurance and consistency of TPA decision-making
What We Are Looking For
- 4-year Bachelor's Degree
- MD or DO degree
- 8 or more years of experience in a clinical setting
- Active and unrestricted license to practice medicine
- Clinical experience appropriate to the conditions under review, including ability to perform peer-level review of medical necessity and pre-existing condition determinations
- Experience working with health insurance preferred
- MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel spreadsheet skills
- Effective communication skills, verbal and written
- Ability to handle shifting priorities
- Effective presentation skills, including the ability to present complex medical risk information
Nice to Have
- Experience with artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in medical review workflows
- Knowledge of underwriting intent and policy interpretation
- Experience with quality assurance and consistency of TPA decision-making
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements governing adverse benefit determinations, grievance processes, and clinical review standards
