About the Role

The Member of Technical Staff position for Agents Modeling at Cohere is a unique opportunity for experienced machine learning researchers and engineers to contribute to the development of frontier models for AI systems. This role is critical in Cohere's mission to scale intelligence and serve humanity through the widespread adoption of AI. As part of the team, you will be working closely with other talented researchers, engineers, and designers who are passionate about their craft and dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with AI.

Day-to-day, you will be involved in designing and developing novel agentic solutions, improving upon state-of-the-art performances on challenging agentic tasks, and researching the next generation of online learning-from-experience self-improvement. The role requires a high degree of collaboration, working with partner teams such as Reasoning, Post-training, and Pre-training to enhance the performance of agentic systems.

What You Will Do

  • Design and develop novel agentic solutions that can push the frontiers of AI capabilities.
  • Improve upon state-of-the-art performances on hard agentic tasks, contributing to the advancement of AI technology.
  • Research the next-generation of online learning-from-experience self-improvement, focusing on how AI systems can learn and adapt more effectively.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to improve the performance of agentic systems, ensuring a holistic approach to AI development.
  • Work on developing data-generation techniques for post-training (SFT and RL) Cohere’s models, enhancing their ability to learn from experience.
  • Contribute to the development of synthetic data generation pipelines, supporting the creation of more sophisticated AI models.
  • Participate in the development of new strategies for training models for advanced agent capabilities, including reasoning, tool use, and memory.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in AI and machine learning, applying this knowledge to improve Cohere's models and solutions.
  • Engage in discussions and collaborations with the broader AI research community, contributing to and learning from external developments.

What We Are Looking For

  • A PhD in computer science or a related field, or similar industry research experience, demonstrating a deep understanding of AI and machine learning principles.
  • Strong software engineering skills, with the ability to design, develop, and implement complex software systems.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with ML-related code (e.g., PyTorch, NumPy), showcasing the ability to work with AI and machine learning tools.
  • Experience with LLMs and agentic frameworks, with a focus on how these technologies can be applied to real-world problems.
  • Experience with post-training LLMs (SFT, PEFT, or RL), understanding how to optimize and improve AI models after their initial training.
  • Experience with building synthetic data generation pipelines, contributing to the development of more accurate and diverse AI models.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
