About the Role
The Movement Communications Specialist, Africa role is a unique opportunity to join the Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects. As a key member of the Movement Communications team, you will be responsible for building connections and facilitating dialogue with communities across the Africa region. Your expertise in communication, campaign management, and community organization will be crucial in helping the Foundation achieve its mission.The Movement Communications team is dedicated to bringing people together, celebrating moments of success, and collaborating with other departments to build bridges and understanding within the movement. You will be part of a dynamic team that values collaboration, creativity, and a passion for social impact.
What You Will Do
- Support building connections, trust, and understanding with communities through two-way dialogue
- Deploy software and product features onto relevant Wikis, working closely with the team
- Monitor community channels for news, incidents, and requests, staying up-to-date on the movement's pulse
- Map editor communities and the Wikimedia movement in the African region, focusing on Product and Tech engagement
- Inform communities about the Foundation's work, aligning with recommendations from the Movement Communications Insights
- Take on occasional assignments for other organizational priorities as indicated by your manager
- Collaborate with the team to identify and address community needs and priorities
- Develop and implement strategies to increase community engagement and participation
- Analyze and report on community feedback and sentiment
What We Are Looking For
- Excellent written English and fluency in at least one other African language
- Experience working with Wikimedia communities, including knowledge of dynamics, policies, cultures, and channels
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work with multilingual and multicultural teams
- Well-organized, with skill in handling logistic tasks, meeting deadlines, and adapting to new technologies
- Ability to engage and facilitate dialogue with volunteers across various formats, including virtual meetings and in-person events
- Experience working in a remote environment, with the ability to self-motivate and manage time effectively
- Familiarity with free knowledge communities, the education sector, and/or open source culture
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions
