Job Description

About the Role

As a Network Engineer at Anthropic, you will play a critical role in designing, deploying, and maintaining the company's networking infrastructure. This includes managing physical infrastructure, routing protocols, and network security across multiple data center sites. You will be part of a small but growing team working on mission-critical infrastructure for one of the most exciting AI systems in the world. Your work will have a direct impact on the company's ability to scale and deliver its AI services.

The role requires a unique blend of technical depth in networking and the flexibility to solve problems across the stack. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including compute, storage, and ML infrastructure teams, to optimize network performance for AI workloads and troubleshoot complex distributed systems issues.

Anthropic is committed to creating a reliable and interpretable AI system, and the network engineering team is at the heart of this effort. As a network engineer, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, from building and operating production networks to developing network automation and tooling.

What You Will Do

  • Design, deploy, and maintain high-performance networks across multiple data center sites
  • Manage physical infrastructure, routing protocols, and network security
  • Develop network automation and tooling to improve efficiency and scalability
  • Ensure reliability and performance of the network infrastructure
  • Scale networking infrastructure to support growing demands
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize network performance for AI workloads
  • Troubleshoot complex distributed systems issues that span network, compute, and application layers
  • Participate in on-call rotation and lead response to network-related incidents
  • Develop and implement comprehensive monitoring and debugging tools
  • Plan and execute network expansions to new sites and facilities

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in network engineering, with hands-on experience building and operating production networks
  • Strong software development skills (Python, Go, or similar) and experience building network automation, tooling, or infrastructure software
  • Deep understanding of networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, BGP, ISIS, OSPF, VLANs, VPCs, routing, switching, and network security
  • Experience with the full stack of networking—from physical layer concerns (cabling, optics, hardware) through software-defined networking
  • Comfort working with Linux, command-line tools, and infrastructure-as-code approaches
  • Track record of debugging complex distributed systems issues that span network, compute, and application layers
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud-based networking platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
  • Knowledge of containerization and orchestration tools (Kubernetes, Docker)
  • Familiarity with AI and machine learning concepts and technologies
  • Experience with network security and compliance frameworks

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary and equity package
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Generous PTO and holiday policy
  • Remote work stipend and equipment budget
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Collaborative and dynamic work environment
  • Access to cutting-edge technologies and tools
  • Flexible working hours and work-life balance

How to Stand Out

  • To stand out as a candidate, emphasize your experience with network automation and tooling, as well as your ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Make sure to highlight your problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex distributed systems issues.
  • Familiarize yourself with Anthropic's mission and values, and be prepared to discuss how your skills and experience align with the company's goals.
  • Use your portfolio or resume to demonstrate your technical skills and experience, rather than just listing them.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions during the interview process about the company culture, team dynamics, and opportunities for growth and development.
  • Be prepared to discuss your experience with cloud-based networking platforms, containerization, and AI concepts, as these are likely to be important topics in the interview process.
