About the Role

As an Open Source Program Developer at Datadog, you will be at the forefront of the company's open source initiatives, focusing on building tools, documentation, and policies that enhance the interaction between engineers and open source projects. Your work will have a direct impact on the productivity and efficiency of Datadog's engineering teams, as well as the broader open source community. You will be part of the Open Source Program Office (OSPO), a team dedicated to promoting open source collaboration and innovation within the company.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve collaborating with various teams, including engineering, product, and community outreach. You will work closely with open source communities to understand their needs, identify trends, and develop solutions that benefit both Datadog and the broader open source ecosystem. Your expertise in software development, open source practices, and community engagement will be essential in driving Datadog's open source strategy forward.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and maintain tools that simplify the process of building and releasing open source software at Datadog.
  • Create and maintain tools that ease the ingestion of open source software within Datadog.
  • Design and develop developer-facing documentation and training materials focused on contributing to open source projects and maintaining open source software.
  • Engage with open source communities to understand their challenges, trends, and best practices.
  • Build tools to analyze and report on trends and statistics from open source repositories.
  • Collaborate with Datadog's Open Source Partners to select new projects for the program and ensure the program's continued relevance and usefulness.
  • Research and write content for the Datadog Open Source Hub, contributing to the company's thought leadership in the open source space.
  • Provide feedback on products, contribute to documentation, and participate in code development to enhance Datadog's products and services.
  • Develop and implement policies and standards for open source software use and development within Datadog.
  • Facilitate workshops, webinars, and other educational initiatives to promote open source knowledge and best practices within the company.

What We Are Looking For

  • Approximately 3+ years of experience as a software developer, SRE, or in a related role.
  • Fluency in one or more programming languages, such as Python, JavaScript, Java, Go, C#, or Rust.
  • Experience with open source software development and community engagement.
  • Strong understanding of open source licenses and contributor license agreements.
  • Ability to design and develop tools that enhance engineering productivity.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and empathy skills to build strong relationships across various teams.
  • Passion for building tools and processes that make other engineers more productive.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and version control systems like Git.

Nice to Have

  • Active membership or contributions to open source communities.
  • Experience with DevOps practices and tools.
  • Knowledge of different open source ecosystems and their specific challenges.
  • Participation in open source conferences, meetups, or Hackathons.
