About the Role

The Payments Performance Strategist role at Stripe is a critical position that requires expertise in payment optimization strategies, particularly in card authorization rates. As a key member of the Global Payments Performance team, you will lead data-driven discussions with existing and prospective merchants to identify optimization opportunities. Your goal will be to provide actionable insights and tools to help merchants improve their payment performance, ultimately driving revenue growth and reducing costs.

The Global Payments Performance team serves as a thought leader in the payments industry, partnering with high-potential merchants to set them up for long-term success. You will work closely with the Sales team to deploy your knowledge and differentiate Stripe to win deals, as well as with the Customer Success organization to ensure merchant success.

What You Will Do

  • Lead discussions with existing and prospective merchants on optimization strategies across areas such as card network costs, acceptance, fraud, and cross-border flows.
  • Serve as an internal and merchant-facing expert on payment optimization strategies.
  • Gather and build on Stripe's wide-ranging payments expertise to create optimization narratives and tools supported by rigorous analysis.
  • Use existing tools to deploy sophisticated optimization playbooks and analyses across Stripe's customer portfolio.
  • Synthesize and relay customer feedback and findings to inform Stripe's product roadmap.
  • Provide feedback on tools and playbooks to help continuously improve self-serve offerings.
  • Collaborate with Sales to differentiate Stripe and win deals.
  • Partner with Customer Success to ensure merchant success.
  • Develop and deliver training to Sales and Customer Success teams on payment optimization strategies.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and developments in payment optimization.

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in payments or operations at a leading technology company, or consultancy in the payments industry.
  • Expertise in diagnosing root cause of card authorization rate underperformance and suggesting actionable steps to address root cause issues.
  • Deep understanding of how to improve merchant card authorization rates (e.g., ISO message optimization, retry logic, issuer-level analysis).
  • Ability to partner with merchants to structure and deliver A/B tests that compare card authorization rate performance across payment service providers (PSPs).
  • Experience helping merchants onboard to a new PSP such that their authorization rate performance is optimal from day one.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex data sets and develop data-driven insights.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with cross-functional teams and communicate complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with SQL, dashboard building, modeling, or reporting.
  • Understanding of card network rules and regulations, local payment methods, and the regulatory environment (PSD2/PSD3).
  • Experience presenting to senior business leaders.
  • Ability to advise merchants on how to manage fraud, primarily on card transactions but ideally on alternative payment methods as well.
