Job Description
About the Role
The Policy Intern at Hopelab will play a crucial role in supporting the organization's policy agenda, which aims to leverage evidence-based research and programmatic solutions to influence policymaking and elevate youth voice and participation. This part-time internship, approximately 20 hours per week, offers the flexibility to work from anywhere in the USA and accommodate school schedules or other commitments. The successful candidate will be part of the Strategic Communications and Policy Team, contributing to Hopelab's mission to support equity-centered solutions for the mental health and well-being of young people.As a key member of the team, the Policy Intern will have the opportunity to work on various projects, including policy research and analysis, information brief creation, and educational briefings on youth mental health policy topics. The intern will also collaborate with the Policy Director and other colleagues to develop content for the Hopelab Policy webpage, further enhancing their understanding of policy strategy and development.
Hopelab's policy strategy is built on 20-plus years of experience supporting young people's mental health and well-being, with a focus on assessing the organization's role at the state and federal levels. The team's multi-year approach incorporates expertise in research and translational science, investments in young leaders, partnerships, convening power, and financial support, all aimed at creating a policy landscape rooted in evidence and co-created with young people.
What You Will Do
- Track and analyze youth mental health legislation and regulations at both the state and federal levels
- Provide research assistance for youth mental health-related policy concepts
- Create information briefs on relevant policy topics
- Support educational briefings on youth mental health policy topics
- Work with the Policy Director and Strategic Communications colleagues on developing content for the Hopelab Policy webpage
- Assist in the development of policy strategies and materials
- Conduct research on best practices in policy and advocacy
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to the discussion on policy developments
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure alignment of policy goals with organizational objectives
What We Are Looking For
- Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in the social sciences, with MPH/MPP programs strongly preferred
- Demonstrated interest in youth mental health and well-being, technology, and equity
- Strong research and writing skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently on projects
- Basic familiarity with the U.S. health system, including mental health
- Experience translating policy into public products through writing or graphics work is preferred
- Familiarity with state and federal legislative processes
Nice to Have
- Experience working with policymakers or policy advocates, particularly on health policy issues
- Knowledge of programmatic solutions and their application in policy
- Familiarity with asset-based narrative approaches in policymaking
- Experience with content creation for web pages or social media platforms
