About the Role

The Preferred Drug List (PDL) Pharmacist is a pivotal role within Gainwell Technologies, focused on managing the clinical, operational, and financial aspects of the PDL for the Medicaid Fee-for-Service line of business. This position is key to ensuring that the PDL is both clinically sound and fiscally responsible, reflecting the latest changes in the pharmaceutical market. The role involves working closely with various stakeholders, including the Client, to review clinical, operational, and financial impacts of the PDL.

Day-to-day, the PDL Pharmacist will be responsible for a wide range of activities, from managing drug file-related changes to developing prior authorization criteria and analyzing net cost comparisons. This role requires a deep understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, including new drugs, generics, and drug shortages, as well as the ability to communicate complex clinical information effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.

The PDL Pharmacist works within the Pricing and Contracting team, playing a central role in the development, maintenance, and expansion of the PDL. This involves not only managing the PDL's implementation and updates but also ensuring that all related communications and adjudications reflect the latest PDL changes.

What You Will Do

  • Manage the development, maintenance, and expansion of the Preferred Drug List (PDL), ensuring it remains clinically appropriate and fiscally responsible.
  • Monitor drug file-related changes, including new drugs, new generics, discontinuations, and their impacts on the PDL.
  • Develop PDL-related prior authorization criteria, identifying needed therapeutic class reviews and assisting with their creation and updates.
  • Analyze net cost comparisons, considering factors such as State pricing methodologies, Federal Medicaid rebates, and State supplemental rebates.
  • Draft publications, such as agendas, minutes, and PDL lists, for Client review and public dissemination.
  • Participate in and contribute to clinical and financial drug review meetings, presenting complex clinical information concisely to the Client and at Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee meetings.
  • Create strategy recommendations for drugs, therapeutic drug classes, and utilization management edits/criteria.
  • Research and explain clinical and business aspects of drugs and drug strategies to internal business partners and the Client.
  • Stay informed about upcoming changes in the drug market, including brand patent expirations, generic and biosimilar releases, and new drug therapies.
  • Interface with internal and external pharmacy stakeholders to ensure end-to-end PDL management, analyzing comprehensive clinical evaluations and net costs to inform strategic PDL management recommendations.
  • Support PDL-adjacent financial programs, including volume-based agreements, value-based agreements (VBAs), the Brand over Generic program, and the preferred diabetic supplies program (DSP).

What We Are Looking For

  • Proven experience managing formularies from clinical, operational, and financial perspectives, preferably in a similar role or industry.
  • Strong personal computer and business solutions software skills, including proficiency in Excel.

  • Experience with managing weekly meetings with Clients to review PDL-related matters and with drafting publications for Client review.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritizing tasks and managing time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make informed decisions.
  • Familiarity with drug market trends, including brand patent expirations, generic releases, and new drug therapies.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with out-of-the-box (OOTB) technology to optimize PDL operations management.
  • Knowledge of Medicaid Drug Rebate Program (MDRP) changes and their impact on PDL management.
  • Certification in a related field, such as pharmacology or a clinical specialty.
  • Experience with creating and maintaining desk-level procedures (DLPs) for business continuity.
