About the Role
The Principal Engineer role at Twilio is a key position that will lead the technical strategy for a platform that processes millions of requests. As a member of the Compliance Experiences team, you will be responsible for pioneering AI-driven development workflows and automating complex global telecommunications regulations. This is a remote role that offers the opportunity to work with a talented team of engineers and contribute to the development of innovative solutions.The Compliance Experiences team is at the heart of the Twilio platform, owning two critical domains: Phone Numbers and Compliance (KYC). In this role, you will be expected to lead the architecture and long-term technical roadmap, transitioning legacy systems into a modern, distributed microservices architecture that supports global scale. You will also be responsible for leading by example in using AI coding assistants to automate boilerplate, generate exhaustive test suites, and perform rapid prototyping.
Twilio's KYC Platform is the gateway to accessing all of Twilio's communication APIs, enabling customers to securely provision and operate communication services globally while navigating complex, constantly evolving regulatory requirements. As a Principal Engineer, you will be expected to drive technical excellence across multiple teams, making critical architectural decisions that balance rapid feature innovation with world-class reliability and security.
What You Will Do
- Lead the architecture and long-term technical roadmap for the Compliance Experiences team
- Pioneer AI-driven development workflows using LLMs and agentic agents to accelerate code generation, automate architectural reviews, and synthesize complex global telecommunications regulations into executable logic
- Drive technical excellence across multiple teams, making critical architectural decisions that balance rapid feature innovation with world-class reliability and security
- Partner with Product Managers to translate complex global telecommunications regulations and customer needs into elegant, developer-first APIs and application workflows
- Mentor and uplift senior and staff engineers, fostering a culture of technical curiosity, ownership, and continuous learning
- Identify and mitigate technical risks early, ranging from scalability and security to compliance and regulatory risks
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement solutions that meet customer needs and exceed their expectations
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, ensuring that it is up-to-date and accurate
- Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies, applying this knowledge to improve the platform and drive innovation
What We Are Looking For
- 10+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on technical leadership and architecture
- Strong technical background in computer science, engineering, or a related field
- Experience with AI-driven development workflows, including the use of LLMs and agentic agents
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex technical problems and develop creative solutions
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
- Experience with distributed microservices architecture and cloud-based technologies
- Strong understanding of global telecommunications regulations and compliance requirements
- Experience with mentorship and leadership, with a focus on developing and growing high-performing teams
Nice to Have
- Experience with GitHub Copilot, Anthropic Claude, or internal LLMs
- Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools, including continuous integration and continuous deployment
- Experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes
