About the Role
The Principal Software Engineer role at Dropbox is a critical position that requires a unique blend of technical expertise, business acumen, and leadership skills. As a Principal Engineer, you will own company-critical technical problems and drive long-term technical direction for customer-facing experiences used by millions. You will operate at the intersection of technology, product, and business strategy, identifying areas where AI can meaningfully improve customer value and translating evolving business context and industry advances into durable, multi-area strategies and roadmaps.The role requires a deep understanding of software development, AI, and technical leadership, as well as the ability to collaborate and drive execution across organizations. You will be responsible for defining long-term technical strategy and partnering with senior Product and Engineering leaders to drive technical outcomes across multiple teams and organizations.
What You Will Do
- Own and drive technical outcomes across multiple teams and organizations, delivering company-critical customer and business impact at scale
- Define long-term technical strategy and partner with senior Product and Engineering leaders as the technical owner for the most important company objectives
- Tackle the most ambiguous and far-reaching technical and product problems, shaping what the company builds as much as how it builds it
- Remain deeply hands-on in software development, owning and implementing the most critical, complex, and foundational parts of the system where leverage is highest
- Influence and align roadmaps across organizations, resolving structural bottlenecks and changing how Dropbox builds and operates
- Architect and evolve foundational systems and platforms that enable new product capabilities and operate reliably at the scale of hundreds of millions of users
- Lead the responsible introduction and adoption of AI across product capabilities and engineering workflows
- Bring clarity to the most complex decisions and institutionalize engineering excellence
- Contribute directly through critical design, prototyping, and code reviews
What We Are Looking For
- 10+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on technical leadership and AI
- Expertise in AI, Excel, and Adjust
- Strong understanding of software development principles, including design patterns, testing, and deployment
- Experience with cloud-based systems and scalable architecture
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to drive execution across organizations
- Ability to operate at the intersection of technology, product, and business strategy
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to tackle ambiguous and far-reaching technical and product problems
Nice to Have
- Experience with frontend and backend systems
- Knowledge of machine learning and data science
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies
