About the Role

The Principal Software Engineer will serve as a technical lead across multiple teams in Gusto's fastest-growing organization, the Money Group. This role is critical in defining the long-term technical vision for systems that power cash flow management, lending, expense controls, invoicing, payments, and tax optimization. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of financial systems, AI, and Excel, with the ability to set architectural direction, vet external partners, and prototype new product lines.

As a cornerstone of Gusto's transformation into the Small Business Finance Platform, the Money Group is building a unified financial operating system for small businesses. This includes accounting, banking, payments, lending, and tax, all connected to Gusto's payroll and people platform. The Principal Software Engineer will play a key role in architecting the convergence of Gusto's People Stack and Finance Stack into a unified platform.

What You Will Do

  • Define the north-star architectural vision for the Money Group and identify shorter-term projects that move towards it
  • Serve as a technical lead across multiple teams, setting architectural direction and ensuring high-quality delivery
  • Architect the convergence of Gusto's People Stack and Finance Stack into a unified platform
  • Lead service migration from a large Ruby-on-Rails monolith to a more scalable architecture
  • Collaborate with external partners to integrate new services and features
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance to teams
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and architecture diagrams
  • Participate in code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies in fintech and AI

What We Are Looking For

  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on technical leadership and architecture
  • Strong understanding of financial systems, including cash flow management, lending, and tax optimization
  • Experience with AI and machine learning, particularly in the context of financial services
  • Proficiency in Excel and financial modeling
  • Strong technical skills in programming languages such as Ruby, Java, or Python
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure and scalable architecture
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to mentor and guide engineers
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems

Nice to Have

  • Experience with fintech or banking industry
