About the Role
The Product Counsel role at Stripe is a critical position that requires a unique blend of legal, technical, and business acumen. As a key advisor to the product, engineering, and partnerships teams, you will be responsible for managing the legal and regulatory aspects of Stripe's data products and services. This includes counseling the global product team on issues related to data protection, consumer protection, and product development.The successful candidate will be a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about Stripe's mission of helping businesses grow and thrive. You will work closely with teams across Stripe, including engineering, partnerships, privacy, and security teams, to deliver pragmatic and actionable legal advice on a range of issues related to the product development lifecycle.
What You Will Do
- Counsel the global product team on issues related to data protection, consumer protection, and product development
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver pragmatic and actionable legal advice on product development lifecycle
- Draft, review, and update internal and external-facing foundational terms and documents for Stripe's products and services
- Stay up-to-date on laws and regulations dealing with consumer financial data access and analyze laws, regulatory updates, and industry trends to proactively advise clients of potential product impacts
- Participate as a proactive business partner to the product team and build a trusted advisor relationship offering key legal and strategic business input in evolving Stripe and its product roadmap and strategy
- Provide legal support for product launches and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations
- Develop and maintain relationships with external counsel and other stakeholders as necessary
- Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with product development and launch
- Collaborate with the privacy and security teams to ensure compliance with data protection regulations
What We Are Looking For
- 6+ years of demonstrated experience as a qualified lawyer in a top law firm or in-house legal team working with technology companies
- Proficiency in, and passion for, working with technology and ability to understand complex operational and business models as well as multiple product use cases quickly
- Experience with data protection, consumer protection, and product development laws and regulations
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex legal and technical issues
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
- Proficiency in Excel and other productivity tools

- Experience working with cloud-based API service providers
- Knowledge of financial services laws and regulations
- Familiarity with Stripe's products and services
- Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment
