Job Description

About the Role

The Product Marketing Leader role at Gusto is a strategic and cross-functional leadership position focused on driving the go-to-market strategy and execution for Gusto’s core products. This includes payroll, time & attendance, contractors, and HR experiences and services. As a key member of the product marketing team, the successful candidate will define how Gusto presents itself to target audiences, translating customer and market insights into compelling positioning, clear messaging, and actionable plans.

The role entails leading a team of full-stack product marketers and partnering closely with leaders across Product, Sales, Growth, and Marketing to align strategies and drive measurable results. Reporting to the Head of Product Marketing, this position requires a leader who thrives in both strategy and execution, equally comfortable identifying market opportunities and rolling up their sleeves to turn strategy into action.

Gusto is on a mission to grow the small business economy by handling the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and customers. With teams in multiple locations and a strong remote work culture, Gusto supports over 500,000 small businesses nationwide and is building a workplace that reflects the diversity of the people it serves.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the development and execution of go-to-market strategies for Gusto’s core products, ensuring alignment with the company’s overall mission and goals.
  • Define and evolve Gusto’s product-level positioning and messaging across target audiences, ensuring a clear, differentiated, and valuable solution in the market.
  • Partner with Product and Marketing to shape customer segmentation, pricing, and go-to-market motions that drive adoption and growth.
  • Synthesize market research, customer insights, usage data, and cross-functional input to identify opportunities and inform strategy.
  • Guide the prioritization of opportunities and shape go-to-market plays to ensure each product is brought to market in a way that drives impact for the entire Gusto portfolio.
  • Lead and manage a team of product marketers, providing guidance, mentorship, and development opportunities to ensure team success.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Growth, and Marketing leaders to align strategies and drive measurable results.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of Gusto’s products, target markets, and customer needs.
  • Stay up-to-date with market trends, competitor activity, and emerging technologies to identify opportunities for growth and innovation.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience in product marketing, preferably in the software as a service (SaaS) industry, with a proven track record of leading successful go-to-market strategies.
  • Strong background in GTM and data analysis, with the ability to synthesis complex data into actionable insights.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with experience in guiding and developing high-performing teams.
  • Strong understanding of customer needs and market trends, with the ability to translate insights into compelling positioning and messaging.
  • Experience with product positioning, messaging, and launch planning, with a focus on driving customer engagement and adoption.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in Excel and other data analysis tools, with the ability to analyze complex data sets and develop data-driven strategies.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment, with a strong ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in a virtual setting.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and technologies, with an understanding of how AI can be leveraged to drive marketing and sales strategies.
  • Experience with customer segmentation and pricing strategies, with a focus on driving revenue growth and customer acquisition.
  • Strong understanding of the small business economy and the challenges faced by small business owners, with a passion for supporting and empowering this community.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive base pay and equity (RSUs), reflecting Gusto’s commitment to sharing its success with its employees.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, 401(k), and other perks that support the well-being and financial security of Gusto’s team members.
  • Flexible and remote work arrangements, with the option to work from multiple locations or remotely, supporting a healthy work-life balance.
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth, with access to training, mentorship, and education resources that support career advancement and skill development.
  • A dynamic and supportive work environment, with a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a commitment to building a workplace that reflects the diversity of the people it serves.

How to Stand Out

  • Tip: Showcase your expertise in GTM and data analysis by providing specific examples of successful go-to-market strategies you’ve led and the data-driven insights that informed them.
  • Develop a deep understanding of Gusto’s products, target markets, and customer needs to demonstrate your passion for supporting small businesses and your ability to drive growth and innovation.
