Job Description

About the Role

The Product Marketing Manager, API at Perplexity plays a pivotal role in crafting the external narrative of the company's developer platform, demonstrating the capabilities of the Perplexity API, and driving campaigns that foster developer adoption and platform growth. This position requires a unique blend of technical fluency, marketing acumen, and the ability to communicate complex concepts simply. As a strategic bridge between the API product and its market impact, this role is crucial for Perplexity's continued innovation and success.

Day-to-day, the Product Marketing Manager will be immersed in understanding the needs of developers, the competitive landscape, and the evolving AI technology ecosystem. This involves maintaining a deep, hands-on understanding of how developers evaluate and build with AI APIs and translating that insight into effective positioning, demos, and use-case showcases. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, and sales, is essential to ensure a cohesive and impactful go-to-market strategy.

Given the fast-paced and often ambiguous nature of the tech industry, especially in the realm of AI and developer platforms, this role demands someone who thrives in turning complexity into clarity and can drive definitive points of view amidst uncertainty.

What You Will Do

  • Architect the external narrative of Perplexity's developer platform, focusing on simplicity and impact.
  • Develop and execute go-to-market strategies for API products, emphasizing developer adoption and retention.
  • Conduct market research and competitor analysis to inform product positioning and messaging.
  • Design and implement metrics to measure the success of developer adoption, including signups, first successful API calls, and revenue growth.
  • Plan and execute integrated marketing campaigns across multiple channels, including owned, paid, social, email, events, hackathons, and partner ecosystems.
  • Collaborate with the product and engineering teams to ensure that the market needs are considered in the product roadmap.
  • Develop 'talk tracks' and sales enablement tools that equip customer-facing teams to effectively communicate the value of Perplexity's API to potential customers.
  • Analyze campaign performance, providing data-driven insights to optimize future marketing efforts.
  • Maintain a sharp, real-time view of buyer needs, market trends, and competitor activity to continuously refine the market narrative.

What We Are Looking For

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in product marketing, preferably in a high-growth technology company with a focus on developer platforms or APIs.
  • Proven track record of successfully marketing to developers or technical buyers, with a solid understanding of the developer marketing playbook.
  • Technical fluency, including the ability to read API documentation, run sample code, and engage in discussions about technical tradeoffs with engineers and product managers.
  • Experience in building and managing integrated campaigns from conception to execution, including budgeting, asset development, and performance analysis.
  • A strong background in data analysis and the ability to tie marketing efforts to tangible business outcomes, such as pipeline influence, activation, and retention.
  • Excellent storytelling skills, with the ability to distill complex technical concepts into simple, compelling narratives that resonate with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders, prioritizing tasks and managing projects effectively.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AI and machine learning technologies, and an understanding of their applications in real-world scenarios.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and version control systems like Git.
  • Knowledge of marketing automation platforms and CRM systems.
  • Certification in marketing or a related field.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary and equity package.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Flexible PTO policy to ensure a healthy work-life balance.
  • Annual stipend for professional development and conferences.
  • Access to the latest technologies and tools.
  • Opportunity to work with a cutting-edge AI platform.
  • Remote work arrangements with regular team meetings and social events.

How to Stand Out

  • Ensure your portfolio includes examples of successful product launches and marketing campaigns, particularly those targeting developers or technical audiences.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the current AI and API landscape, including key players, trends, and challenges.
  • Familiarize yourself with Perplexity's products and mission to demonstrate your passion and understanding of the company's vision.
  • Prepare to discuss your experience with data analysis and how you've used metrics to inform marketing decisions in previous roles.
  • Highlight any technical skills or certifications you have, such as proficiency in programming languages or experience with marketing automation tools.
  • Be ready to provide specific examples of how you've handled ambiguity and complexity in your previous marketing roles, and how you've turned those situations into clarity and successful outcomes.
