Job Description

About the Role

The Protection and Controls Engineer role at AECOM is a critical position that requires a talented engineer with a strong background in electrical engineering design and technology principles. As a key member of the Energy Business Line's Engineering Center of Excellence, the successful candidate will work on a wide range of electrical engineering services, including transmission, power distribution, renewables, and next-generation energy projects. The role involves working closely with cross-functional teams, including project engineers, project managers, and clients, to deliver high-quality results and promote the company's skills to new clients.

The Protection and Controls Engineer will be responsible for leading the electrical engineering design work on assigned projects, providing mentorship to junior engineers, and working with project teams to develop design schedules and budgets. The role also involves performing power system studies, system protection settings coordination, and generating basis of design documentation for protection settings and relay configurations.

AECOM's Energy practice provides a wide range of services from consulting and engineering design to energy engineering, energy procurement, and construction (EPC) for power, energy efficiency, and renewable energy clients. What You Will Do

  • Lead the electrical engineering design work on assigned projects, including transmission, power distribution, renewables, and next-generation energy projects
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers and work with project teams to develop design schedules and budgets
  • Perform power system studies, system protection settings coordination, and generate basis of design documentation for protection settings and relay configurations
  • Work with project engineers and project managers to develop design schedules and budgets for electrical engineering work activities
  • Support projects during construction, start-up, and commissioning
  • Review engineering work performed by peers and attend client meetings
  • Occasional travel to client and/or project sites, including data gathering and field walks
  • Mentor early-career engineers and facilitate internal training sessions, if requested
  • Serve as a lead engineer on projects of all sizes and provide specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise
  • Develop study and design procedures to facilitate high-quality, cost-effective work by others
  • Participate in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables and develop construction cost estimates and estimates of technical efforts for projects

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • At least 6 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, with a focus on protection and controls
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering design and technology principles
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks and projects
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with Excel and other electrical engineering software
  • Ability to travel occasionally to client and/or project sites
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain high-quality standards

Nice to Have

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Experience with power system simulation software, such as PSS/E or PSSE
  • Knowledge of energy storage systems, including battery energy storage systems (BESS)
  • Experience with renewable energy projects, including solar and wind power
  • Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE)
