Job Description

About the Role

The Advanced Mathematics Research Consultant position at 24-MAG is a unique opportunity for accomplished mathematics researchers to apply their skills in a remote, part-time consulting capacity. This role is focused on supporting current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities that demand research-grade problem design, proof review, and high-quality project execution. Selected professionals will be part of a team that values intellectual integrity, precision, and the ability to work independently.

As a mathematics research consultant, your day-to-day tasks will involve authoring challenging mathematics problems, evaluating complex reasoning, and identifying subtle mathematical errors. You will be working with a small team of senior contributors to ensure task quality and difficulty calibration, maintaining high standards of accuracy and precision in all submitted work.

This role is ideal for individuals who have a passion for mathematical research and have experience in research-level problem authoring, proof construction, and proof verification. The ability to work remotely and contribute to frontier-level mathematical projects makes this opportunity particularly appealing to those seeking flexibility and challenge in their career.

What You Will Do

  • Author challenging mathematics problems across pure mathematics, applied mathematics, theoretical computer science, statistics, or adjacent research areas.
  • Develop tasks involving proof construction, proof verification, problem-solving, formalization, and conjecture exploration.
  • Create materials that require research-level mathematical reasoning rather than textbook-level pattern recognition.
  • Design problems with clear expected reasoning paths, rigorous standards, and high technical depth.
  • Evaluate mathematical outputs for correctness, rigor, clarity, and completeness.
  • Identify subtle errors such as unjustified steps, misapplied hypotheses, hand-waved lemmas, invalid reductions, or plausible but incorrect proofs.
  • Assess whether proposed arguments meet the standards of working research mathematics.
  • Provide structured feedback explaining mathematical strengths, weaknesses, and required corrections.
  • Collaborate with a small program team and other senior contributors on task quality and difficulty calibration.
  • Review evaluation materials for consistency, rigor, and research relevance.
  • Help surface areas where current mathematical reasoning systems fail.

What We Are Looking For

  • Active or recent research role as a PhD candidate, postdoc, instructor, faculty member, principal researcher, industry research mathematician, or comparable contributor.
  • Deep research expertise in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical physics, theoretical computer science, statistics, or a related field.
  • Strong publication record, especially in leading mathematics journals, top specialty journals, or top-tier adjacent venues.
  • Doctoral or postdoctoral training at a highly regarded mathematics, STEM, or theoretical research institution.
  • Ability to evaluate complex proofs and identify subtle mathematical issues quickly.
  • Excellent written communication skills and strong attention to detail.
  • PhD, advanced doctoral training, postdoctoral experience, or equivalent research output in mathematics or a closely related field.
  • Experience with tools such as Adjust and Excel for data analysis and presentation.

Nice to Have

  • First-author, sole-author, or otherwise substantial research publications in highly selective mathematics or adjacent research venues.
  • Competitive fellowships, research awards, named grants, olympiad-level distinctions, Putnam-level distinctions, or comparable research signals.
  • Experience reviewing proofs, supervising research, designing advanced mathematical problems, or equivalent professional activities.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive hourly rate of
    00-
    60 per hour.
  • Opportunity to work on frontier-level mathematical projects.
  • Flexible, remote work arrangement.
  • Collaboration with a team of senior researchers and mathematicians.
  • Professional development opportunities through research and publication.
  • Access to cutting-edge mathematical tools and software.
  • Recognition and reward for outstanding contributions to mathematical research.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance and retirement plan, for eligible employees.

How to Stand Out

  • Ensure your resume and cover letter highlight your research experience and publications in mathematics.
  • Prepare to discuss your approach to proof construction and verification during the interview.
  • Familiarize yourself with common mathematical software and tools to demonstrate proficiency.
  • Show examples of your work, such as research papers or problem sets, to demonstrate your skills.
  • Be ready to discuss how you handle subtle mathematical errors and how you approach complex problem-solving.
  • Consider asking about the team's dynamics and the company culture to ensure it's a good fit.
  • Don't hesitate to negotiate your hourly rate based on your experience and qualifications.
