Job Description

About the Role

The role of a Research Physicist at Mindrift involves contributing to the development and improvement of AI systems through project-based work. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about physics and eager to apply their knowledge in a cutting-edge field. As a freelancer, you will have the opportunity to work on diverse projects, each with its unique challenges and requirements.

The day-to-day responsibilities of a Research Physicist at Mindrift include designing and developing physics-based problems that simulate real-world research workflows. These problems are designed to be computationally intensive, requiring the use of numerical simulation methods and creative thinking to solve. The goal is to create complex, non-trivial reasoning chains in mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics, mirroring real research challenges or practical applications.

What You Will Do

  • Design original optics problems that simulate real physics research workflows
  • Ensure problems are computationally intensive and cannot be solved manually within reasonable timeframes
  • Develop problems requiring non-trivial reasoning chains in mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics
  • Base problems on real research challenges or practical applications from optics & physics practice
  • Document problem statements clearly and provide verified correct answers
  • Participate in project-based work, focusing on the testing, evaluation, and improvement of AI systems
  • Collaborate with other specialists and project leaders to achieve project goals
  • Apply digital skills to facilitate remote work and communication
  • Stay updated with the latest developments in physics and AI to continuously improve problem design and solution approaches

What We Are Looking For

  • Degree in Physics (Theoretical, Experimental, or Computational) or related fields
  • 2+ years of professional experience in applied, research, or teaching physics
  • Experience with numerical simulation methods
  • Ability to design problems that mirror real physics research workflows
  • Creative thinking in problem design across diverse physics areas
  • Familiarity with physics modeling and approximation techniques
  • Strong written English (C1+)

Nice to Have

  • Experience in AI or machine learning
  • Knowledge of programming languages relevant to physics and AI applications
  • Participation in open-source projects or personal initiatives related to physics and AI

Benefits and Perks

  • Earn up to $35 per hour, depending on the level and pace of contribution
  • Opportunity to work on diverse, project-based AI initiatives
  • Flexible, remote work arrangements
  • Collaboration with a network of specialists in AI and physics
  • Professional development through exposure to cutting-edge AI technologies and physics applications
  • Access to a platform that connects specialists with leading tech companies for project-based engagements

How to Stand Out

  • Develop a portfolio that showcases your ability to design complex physics problems and apply numerical simulation methods.
  • Highlight any experience with AI or machine learning, even if it's through personal projects or open-source contributions.
  • Ensure your English proficiency is at a C1 level or higher, as strong written communication is essential for this role.
  • Prepare to discuss specific examples of how you've applied physics principles to solve real-world problems or challenges.
  • Be ready to talk about your experience with remote work and how you manage your time and stay motivated in a freelance or part-time capacity.
  • Consider brushing up on the latest developments in AI and physics to demonstrate your commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth.
  • When discussing compensation, be prepared to negotiate based on your level of expertise and the complexity of the projects you undertake.
