About the Role

The Researcher position on the Gender Equality Metrics team at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about using data to drive meaningful change in global health. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for analyzing and producing estimates of gender-based violence for the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, as well as analyzing sex differences in GBD outputs and other indicators of interest. Your work will have a direct impact on informing health policy and practice, and you will be part of a dynamic team of researchers and professionals dedicated to improving health outcomes worldwide.

The IHME is an independent research organization that delivers timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence to improve health policy and practice. The organization carries out its mission through a range of projects within different research areas, including the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors; Future Health Scenarios; Cost Effectiveness and Efficiency; Resource Tracking; and Impact Evaluations. As a Researcher on the Gender Equality Metrics team, you will be an integral part of this effort, working closely with experienced scientists and faculty to produce and disseminate high-quality research.

The team's work is focused on producing estimates of gender-based violence for the GBD Study, as well as analyzing sex differences in GBD outputs and other indicators of interest. This work requires a strong foundation in statistical analysis, epidemiology, and data visualization, as well as excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present complex research findings.

What You Will Do

  • Develop a core understanding of assigned research area methodology and its components
  • Carry out quantitative analyses and statistical modeling to produce results designated on a given timeline as part of collaborative research projects
  • Extract data from various sources and databases, including surveys, vital registration, censuses, literature, registries, and administrative records
  • Format, transform, review, and assess data sources to determine their relevance and utility for ongoing analysis
  • Apply computational and statistical tools and algorithms for the preprocessing, analysis, and visualization of source data
  • Document code and analytic approaches systematically so that analyses can be replicated by other team members
  • Lead discussions in research meetings about results and analyses to vet, improve, and finalize results
  • Contribute to the creation of presentations, manuscripts, and funding proposals
  • Coauthor scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Maintain scientific awareness and intellectual agility with data, methods, and analytic techniques
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data professionals, researchers, and external partners to advance research objectives

What We Are Looking For

  • Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, math, economics, quantitative social sciences, or related discipline
  • At least one year of experience with statistical modeling and quantitative analysis
  • Strong foundation in statistical analysis, epidemiology, and data visualization
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present complex research findings
  • Experience working with large datasets and performing data analysis and visualization
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as R, Python, or SQL
  • Experience with data management and version control systems such as Git
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Passion for using data to drive meaningful change in global health

Nice to Have

  • Experience or research with gender-based violence work
  • Proven interest and some experience in a given disease, risk, key indicator, methodologic area
  • Experience working with global health data and collaborating with international partners
  • Familiarity with machine learning or artificial intelligence techniques
  • Experience with data storytelling and presenting complex research findings to non-technical audiences
