Job Description

About the Role

The role of a Robotics Engineer at Turing is multifaceted and pivotal. As a member of the team building the data layer for Physical AI, the successful candidate will be responsible for designing high-value, off-the-shelf datasets that solve real-world problems in robotics. This involves working closely with data collection teams and customers to understand their needs and provide tailored solutions. The role entails a deep understanding of why models succeed or fail in real-world scenarios and leveraging that knowledge to create datasets that improve model performance.

Turing is at the forefront of AI innovation, and this role is a critical part of that effort. The company's mission to accelerate frontier research and integrate AI into mission-critical workflows requires talented individuals who can bridge the gap between technology and practical application. As a Robotics Engineer, the candidate will be part of a team that is shaping the future of AI and robotics.

The role is remote, with travel required both within the US and internationally, offering a unique blend of flexibility and the opportunity to work with global teams. The candidate will act as a technical authority, partnering with the sales team to translate customer pain points into well-defined data solutions. This requires strong communication skills, the ability to understand customer needs, and the technical expertise to design effective solutions.

What You Will Do

  • Design specifications for high-value dataset products that address specific customer pain points.
  • Partner with the sales team to understand customer needs and provide technical solutions.
  • Define what constitutes high-quality data for model learning, moving beyond basic QA to semantic QA.
  • Establish workflows to train and fine-tune open-source Robotics Foundation Models on Turing's data.
  • Empirically prove that Turing's data improves model performance through rigorous testing and evaluation.
  • Develop automated workflows to analyze model performance gaps and identify areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with data collection teams to ensure that the right data is being captured.
  • Build and lead a "Benchmarking & Optimization" business unit to evaluate, diagnose, and improve the performance of customers' robotics foundational models.
  • Act as a bridge between data collection teams and customers, ensuring that datasets meet customer needs and improve model performance.

What We Are Looking For

  • First-hand experience training foundation models for robotics.
  • Strong understanding of why models succeed or fail in the real world and how to design datasets to improve model performance.
  • Experience in designing and implementing high-value, off-the-shelf datasets for robotics applications.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with open-source Robotics Foundation Models.
  • Knowledge of data quality metrics beyond basic QA.
  • Ability to travel both within the US and internationally.
  • Strong technical background in robotics and AI.
  • Experience in leading or contributing to the development of new business units or products.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms and tools.
  • Knowledge of agile development methodologies.
  • Certification in data science or a related field.
  • Experience with DevOps practices and tools.
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance in data and AI.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunity to work with a leading company in AI innovation.
  • Flexible, remote work arrangement with international travel opportunities.
  • Access to cutting-edge technology and tools.
  • Professional development opportunities, including training and conference attendance.
  • Comprehensive health insurance and wellness programs.
  • Generous PTO policy and holidays.
  • Equity options for long-term growth and investment.

How to Stand Out

  • To stand out, highlight specific projects where you've improved model performance through dataset design.
  • Showcase your ability to communicate technical ideas to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Be prepared to discuss your experience with open-source Robotics Foundation Models and how you've used them.
  • Emphasize your understanding of data quality metrics and how you ensure high-quality data for model learning.
  • Prepare examples of times when you've worked remotely and managed international travel for work.
  • When discussing salary, be prepared to talk about your expectations based on industry standards and your unique skill set.
  • Watch for red flags such as lack of clear communication about the role, unrealistic expectations, or insufficient resources for remote work.
