About the Role

The Scientific Writer/Editor role at ICF is a unique opportunity for a skilled medical writer to support high-visibility federal health communications initiatives. This position focuses on the development, editing, and maintenance of evidence-based health content for various audiences, including the public and healthcare professionals. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of federal plain language and health literacy standards, ensuring that complex medical and scientific information is translated into clear, accessible formats.

Day-to-day, the Scientific Writer/Editor will collaborate closely with subject matter experts and stakeholders to research, write, edit, and update health-related content for both web and print formats. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines, is crucial. Given the nature of the role, experience with content management systems (CMS) and applying web-writing best practices, including SEO and scannability, will be highly valued.

What You Will Do

  • Research, write, edit, and update health-related content for web and print formats to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Translate complex medical and scientific information into plain language, adhering to federal plain language and health literacy standards.
  • Develop and edit fact sheets, educational materials, and other content based on scientific evidence.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and stakeholders to ensure the quality and relevance of the content.
  • Perform quality control reviews for accuracy and consistency across all content.
  • Support web content updates using content management systems (CMS).
  • Apply web-writing best practices, including SEO and scannability, to enhance user experience.
  • Support recurring content review cycles to keep information up-to-date.
  • Develop meeting summaries and synthesis documents as needed.

What We Are Looking For

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Master’s preferred).
  • At least 3 years of experience writing and editing medical or scientific content.
  • Experience writing for public and/or professional audiences.
  • Strong understanding of plain language and health literacy principles.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to synthesize complex scientific material into clear, accessible language.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with Excel and other relevant software tools.

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting federal health agencies.
  • Familiarity with biomedical or integrative health topics.
