About the Role
As a Security Researcher at OpenAI, you will be part of the Preparedness team, focused on identifying and mitigating potential AI threats to global security. Your work will involve monitoring and predicting the evolving capabilities of frontier AI systems, developing safeguards to prevent misuse, and collaborating with other teams to implement security measures. The role requires a deep understanding of AI systems, security protocols, and the ability to think critically about potential threats.
The Preparedness team is a critical part of OpenAI's safety research efforts, and this role will play a key part in shaping the company's approach to mitigating AI threats. You will be working closely with other researchers, engineers, and stakeholders to develop and implement effective security strategies.

What You Will Do
- Identify potential paths by which capable future internal AI agents could compromise OpenAI's systems
- Design and implement security controls to mitigate these threats
- Conduct penetration tests and evaluations to stress-test defenses
- Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the evolving capabilities of frontier AI systems
- Collaborate with other teams to implement security measures and ensure effective mitigation strategies
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to ensure effective communication and collaboration
- Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in AI security and threat research
- Participate in the development of OpenAI's preparedness framework and contribute to the company's overall security strategy
- Engage with the broader security research community to stay informed about emerging threats and trends
What We Are Looking For
- A deep understanding of AI systems, including modern infrastructure, operating systems, and distributed systems
- Strong software engineering skills, with the ability to build prototypes and develop effective security solutions
- Experience in security research, threat analysis, or a related field
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders
- A strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, including cloud security and compliance
