About the Role
The Senior Backend Engineer (AI) role at GitLab is a unique opportunity to shape the future of DevSecOps. As a key member of the Verify stage team, you will help integrate AI into CI/CD workflows, working on features that improve performance, reliability, and usability for millions of CI jobs. You will collaborate with Engineering, Product, and UX partners to refine priorities, define success metrics, and instrument behavior in production.The role entails designing, building, and iterating on AI-assisted and agentic CI experiences. You will work on features that improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of CI/CD workflows, leveraging AI to drive innovation and impact. The team is driven by GitLab's values and continuous knowledge exchange, enabling team members to reach their full potential while collaborating with industry leaders to solve complex problems.
What You Will Do
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine priorities and define success metrics
- Design, build, and iterate on AI-assisted and agentic CI experiences
- Integrate GitLab's Duo Agent Platform into CI workflows at scale
- Work on features that improve performance, reliability, and usability for millions of CI jobs
- Define and implement patterns for measuring success and instrumenting behavior in production
- Keep a close eye on the competitive landscape and emerging AI-native DevOps tools
- Contribute to the development of AI Pipeline Builder, Fix a Failing Pipeline, and instrumentation and observability layers
- Harden the CI pipeline and ensure fast, reliable, secure, and observable foundation
- Work on real-world environments, accounting for large language model limitations
- Refine priorities and define success metrics with Engineering, Product, and UX partners
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, with a focus on AI and CI/CD workflows
- Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, AI integration, and DevSecOps
- Experience with cloud-based infrastructure and containerization (e.g., Kubernetes)
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Ruby, Java, or Python
- Strong understanding of software development life cycles and agile methodologies
- Experience with AI and machine learning technologies (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with cross-functional teams
- Passion for innovative problem-solving and driving efficiency through AI
Nice to Have
- Experience with GitLab CI/CD and Duo Agent Platform
- Knowledge of emerging AI-native DevOps tools and technologies
- Experience with large-scale infrastructure and scalability challenges
