About the Role

The Senior Backend Engineer role at Remote is a unique opportunity to join a team of experienced engineers working on ambitious problems. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for building tools, APIs, and integrations using Elixir and Phoenix. You will be working closely with cross-functional development teams to deliver high-quality solutions that meet the needs of Remote's HR and payroll products. The team is organized into verticals, and you will be assigned to a specific team based on business needs and your preferences.

The day-to-day responsibilities of this role will include leading the development of major team-scoped projects, participating in product work, and providing technical insights to improve the overall quality of the products. You will also be responsible for maintaining a good understanding of the team's domain, both from a product and engineering perspective, and providing feedback on code reviews.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the development of major team-scoped projects
  • Participate in product work and provide feedback on product improvements
  • Use technical insights to suggest product improvements
  • Maintain a good understanding of the team's domain
  • Provide feedback on code reviews
  • Contribute to the shared codebase
  • Debug and solve technical and business issues
  • Participate in non-team activities, such as support rotations and hiring process
  • Mentor and provide guidance to other engineers

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong engineering fundamentals and a track record of shipping production systems
  • Practical experience designing or adopting agentic/automation workflows
  • Ability to think in systems and define specs clearly
  • Experience with Postgres or similar databases
  • Experience with CI/CD tools, such as GitLab, GitHub, or Jenkins
  • Demonstrated strong automation and AI capabilities
  • Nice to have experience with Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, Nextjs, React, or Vue
