Senior Backend Engineer

About the Role

The backend engineering team at Gorgias is responsible for managing the core infrastructure that underpins the company's platform, including the ticket processing pipeline, real-time event fanout, and third-party integrations. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of technical challenges, from designing and implementing new features to optimizing existing systems for performance and scalability.

What You Will Do

• Design and implement scalable backend systems that meet the needs of Gorgias's growing customer base
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and engineering, to develop and deliver new features and functionality
• Work with the Realtime Communication Team to develop and maintain the core ticket processing pipeline and real-time event fanout system
• Participate in the development and maintenance of the Messaging Team's core asynchronous messaging infrastructure
• Collaborate with the Growth Team to develop and maintain the user journey from onboarding to billing, ensuring a seamless experience while preventing fraudsters from abusing the platform
• Work with the In-App Analytics Team to develop and maintain in-product analytics and real-time processing features
• Participate in the development and maintenance of the Streaming Infrastructure Team's scalable data streaming platform
• Design and implement API, models, and features for 16,000 merchants and 12 million shoppers across the world
• Ship features in production by yourself, with the autonomy to make technical decisions and drive projects forward
• Monitor the success of your deployment in accordance with Gorgias's monitoring strategy and success criteria
• Participate in solving today's technical challenges to make Gorgias's platform and systems scale to an always-increasing customer and data traffic
• Help customers by debugging, correcting, or providing incident response by participating in a support and on-call rotation with other engineers

What We Are Looking For

• 6+ years of experience in software development, with a strong foundation in backend engineering
• Proficiency in languages such as Python or Java
• Experience working with complex product architectures and a deep understanding of modern software design principles
• A proven track record of shipping user-facing products at scale, with full ownership of your work beyond the code
• The ability to think in terms of systems and be pragmatic when solving problems under real-world constraints
• A commitment to writing clean, testable code and building high-quality software that lasts
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
• Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with a strong focus on innovation and customer satisfaction
• A willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and workflows
• A strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns

Nice to Have

• Experience working with cloud-based infrastructure and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
• Familiarity with agile development methodologies and version control systems such as Git
• Experience working with data pipelines and data warehousing technologies such as Apache Beam and BigQuery
• A strong understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices for securing backend systems
• Experience working with machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies
