About the Role
The Senior Counsel, Commercial (Hardware) role at Openai is a critical position that requires a unique blend of legal expertise, technical knowledge, and business acumen. As a key member of the Commercial Legal team, you will be responsible for providing legal support for Openai's consumer electronics business, working closely with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineering, product design, manufacturing operations, procurement, finance, tax, and trade. Your primary focus will be on managing complex commercial agreements, negotiating contracts, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.The ideal candidate will have a strong background in commercial law, with experience in drafting and negotiating complex contracts, managing intellectual property issues, and ensuring regulatory compliance. You will be working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, where no two days are the same, and will need to be adaptable, proactive, and able to think on your feet.

What You Will Do
- Provide practical, business-oriented legal advice to cross-functional teams, including hardware engineering, manufacturing operations, product design, and procurement
- Draft and negotiate complex commercial agreements, including supply, development, licensing, manufacturing, and other contracts
- Identify and address commercial, product, regulatory, and privacy issues arising from commercial transactions
- Develop strategies and processes for handling legal issues in creative and scalable ways that support growth
- Collaborate with colleagues across Openai's global legal team to ensure alignment across jurisdictions
- Monitor and advise on regulatory and compliance matters affecting hardware and technology
- Build cross-functional relationships and adapt communication styles to diverse audiences
- Develop and implement training programs to educate teams on legal and regulatory issues
- Manage outside counsel and vendors as needed
- Stay up-to-date with changing regulatory requirements and industry trends
What We Are Looking For
- 8+ years of experience in commercial law, with a focus on technology, hardware, and consumer electronics
- Strong background in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts, including hardware supply, manufacturing, procurement, and intellectual property ownership and licensing
- Experience working in an in-house legal department or a technology-focused law firm
- JD and license or qualification to practice in CA
- Strong communication and business judgment skills, with the ability to tailor advice to enable responsible growth
- Ability to build cross-functional relationships and adapt communication styles to diverse audiences
- Strong sense of ownership, intellectual curiosity, and enthusiasm for technology
- Sound judgment in ambiguous or fast-changing situations
- Experience working in an entrepreneurial environment, with a proactive and independent approach
