About the Role

The Senior Counsel, Employment position at OpenAI is a pivotal role that combines legal expertise with a passion for technology, specifically in the realm of AI enablement. This role is part of the Legal team, which plays a crucial role in navigating the innovative and fundamental legal issues surrounding AI. The successful candidate will be based in San Francisco, CA, and will work closely with the People Team, product teams, and other stakeholders to provide counsel on a wide range of employment legal matters.

The role is ideal for someone who is enthusiastic about the intersection of technology and law, particularly in the context of AI. What You Will Do

  • Provide advice and counsel to people and product teams on AI enablement and automation, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Support on a broad range of employment legal matters, including but not limited to employee relations, labor laws, and benefits.
  • Work cross-functionally with the People Team to develop and implement policies and procedures that align with the company's mission and values.
  • Support strategic initiatives related to facilitating legal training and managing outside counsel on employment litigation matters and administrative charges.
  • Lead on and develop processes for scaling legal support for employment legal matters, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with other teams to identify and mitigate potential legal risks associated with AI enablement and automation.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, including law firms and consultants.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in employment law, particularly in the context of AI, and apply this knowledge to advise the company.
  • Participate in the development of company-wide policies and procedures related to employment law.
  • Manage and coordinate legal matters related to employment, including litigation and administrative charges.

What We Are Looking For

  • A JD and license or qualification to practice in CA, with 8+ years of combined legal experience at fast-paced technology companies and technology-focused law firms.
  • Strong expertise in AI-related employment laws, with a deep understanding of federal and state labor and employment laws and regulations.
  • Experience managing complex employment litigation matters and administrative charges.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a strong sense of ownership and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to advise and counsel teams effectively.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including product and people teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex legal issues and develop creative solutions.
  • Experience with employee privacy laws and regulations, with a plus for those with expertise in this area.
  • A deep interest in, and experience with, advising product and people teams on AI enablement and automation.
