About the Role

The Senior Counsel, Product (Marketing) role at OpenAI is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of the legal and AI fields. As the primary go-to counsel for the marketing organization, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to support campaigns, launches, events, partnerships, and other initiatives that tell OpenAI's story to the world. The marketing organization is responsible for building creative, impactful, and legally sound programs that showcase OpenAI's products and services. The ideal candidate will have a strong sense of ownership, be inquisitive and enthusiastic about technology, and enjoy being continually challenged.

The Senior Counsel will be responsible for advising on advertising, consumer protection, endorsements, promotions, contests, claims, IP, privacy, and marketing-related regulatory issues. This will include reviewing and approving marketing claims, campaign materials, creative concepts, product launch assets, and brand initiatives in a practical, business-oriented way. The Senior Counsel will also develop strategies for handling legal issues in creative ways and build processes for scaling flexible solutions that address risk.

What You Will Do

  • Be the primary go-to counsel for OpenAI's marketing organization
  • Partner with marketing, brand, communications, product marketing, growth, creative, performance, and events teams on campaigns across digital, print, social, influencer, email, events, and other channels
  • Advise on advertising, consumer protection, endorsements, promotions, contests, claims, IP, privacy, and marketing-related regulatory issues
  • Review and approve marketing claims, campaign materials, creative concepts, product launch assets, and brand initiatives in a practical, business-oriented way
  • Develop strategies for handling legal issues in creative ways and build processes for scaling flexible solutions that address risk
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support campaigns, launches, events, partnerships, and other initiatives
  • Provide guidance on compliance with regulatory requirements, including FTC, state UDAP, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, and EU/UK standards
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, including law firms and regulatory bodies
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and developments in marketing and advertising law

What We Are Looking For

  • 10+ years of experience with a mix of in-house and technology-focused law firm roles
  • JD and license or qualification to practice in CA
  • Strong understanding of advertising, consumer protection, and regulatory issues
  • Experience advising on marketing and advertising campaigns
  • Ability to develop practical solutions that balance risk-taking with responsible development
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Strong sense of ownership and enthusiasm for technology
  • Sound judgment in ambiguous situations
  • Ability to build cross-functional relationships and communication styles that resonate with marketing, creative, communications, and product teams
