About the Role

As a Senior Data Engineer at Samsara, you will be part of a dynamic team responsible for enhancing data analysis efficiency and effectiveness. Your primary focus will be on designing and maintaining data pipelines, leveraging SparkSQL and Pyspark, within the company's central data lake. These pipelines are crucial for ingesting and transforming source data from IoT devices and software products into Samsara's core data model, facilitating statistical analysis, model training, and dashboard creation.

The Data team at Samsara comprises Data Scientists, Data Analysts, and Data Engineers, all working together to drive business decisions through data-driven insights. As a Senior Data Engineer, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Data Science & Analytics, AI/ML, and other Data Engineers, to ensure high-quality data for diverse purposes.

What You Will Do

  • Design and maintain highly reliable computed tables, incorporating data from various sources, including unstructured data like video and audio, Samsara sensor & product data, and customer metadata.
  • Access, manipulate, and integrate external datasets with internal data to facilitate comprehensive analysis.
  • Deliver high-quality data with strong uptime and reliability requirements, including customer-facing data sets that inform business-critical decisions.
  • Collaborate with Data Science & Analytics teams to develop and refine data models that support causal inference, model training, and dashboarding.
  • Work closely with AI/ML engineers to integrate data pipelines with machine learning models, enhancing predictive capabilities.
  • Participate in customer interviews and collaborate with customer success and product managers to ensure data solutions meet customer needs.
  • Champion Samsara's cultural principles, focusing on customer success, adopting a growth mindset, and promoting inclusivity.
  • Develop and maintain documentation of data pipelines and architectures for knowledge sharing and continuity.
  • Contribute to the development of best practices and standards for data engineering within the organization.

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on designing, building, and maintaining large-scale data pipelines.
  • Strong proficiency in SparkSQL and Pyspark, with experience in big data processing and analysis.
  • Experience with data ingestion tools and technologies, such as Apache Kafka, Apache Beam, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling principles and data warehousing concepts.
  • Experience working with cloud-based data platforms, such as AWS or GCP.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and data quality.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems like Git.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Docker and containerization.
  • Knowledge of data security and compliance principles.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and deep learning concepts.
  • Experience with data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js.
