About the Role
The Senior Engineering Manager, Data Platform role is a critical position at Root, Inc., responsible for leading a team of data engineers in maintaining and developing the company's data pipelines, data orchestration, and advanced analytics capabilities. As part of the engineering team, the Senior Engineering Manager will work closely with cross-functional teams to set and execute against Root's foundational data strategy.The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of data engineers, providing guidance and support to ensure the team is performing at a high level. This will involve setting clear goals, providing feedback and coaching, and creating an environment that fosters growth and development. The Senior Engineering Manager will also be responsible for identifying gaps in the team and developing plans to address them through individual development, hiring, or partnership.

What You Will Do
- Lead a team of data engineers in maintaining and developing the company's data pipelines, data orchestration, and advanced analytics capabilities
- Partner with cross-functional teams to set and execute against Root's foundational data strategy
- Develop and implement data architecture and infrastructure to support business growth
- Manage and coach data engineers to ensure they are performing at a high level
- Identify gaps in the team and develop plans to address them through individual development, hiring, or partnership
- Collaborate with engineering leadership to improve the effectiveness of the engineering organization
- Proactively dive into code, design reviews, and technical challenges alongside the team
- Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders to ensure data needs are met
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to identify opportunities for growth and improvement
What We Are Looking For
- 7+ years of experience as a data engineer
- 5+ years of experience as a people manager on engineering teams
- Experience with SQL, Python, Terraform, and AWS cloud infrastructure
- Experience building and maintaining OLAP systems and data platforms
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails
- Expertise in Cloud Architecture preferred
- Proven leadership of projects involving multiple teams across functional domains
- Excellent communication skills both with engineering colleagues and senior business leaders
- Experience with data strategy and data-driven decision making
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Nice to Have
- Experience with machine learning and artificial intelligence
- Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI
- Experience with agile development methodologies
- Familiarity with containerization using Docker
