About the Role
As a Senior Engineering Manager at Mercury, you will lead the Domestic Wires & Real-time Payments team, responsible for building and maintaining the systems behind secure, compliant, and reliable money movement. This team is at the core of how businesses move money, and their work has a direct impact on the company's success. You will be responsible for guiding your team through its next stage of growth, driving predictable execution against company and product goals, and fostering a healthy and high-performing team environment.The role requires a seasoned engineering leader with experience managing software engineering teams, operating in high-responsibility domains, and balancing new development with ongoing maintenance and operational excellence. You will be expected to grow with the domain as new payment capabilities and teams emerge, and to coach emerging leaders within the group.
Mercury's pursuit of a bank charter adds an extra layer of complexity and opportunity to this role, as the company builds the infrastructure and controls required to operate bank-grade payments systems.
What You Will Do
- Lead a team of 7+ backend and full-stack engineers
- Hire, mentor, and retain high-performing engineers across experience levels
- Help shape the organization structure as the payment rails group scales
- Coach emerging leaders within the group
- Drive predictable execution against company and product goals
- Foster a healthy, engaging, and high-performing team environment
- Uphold a high bar for technical quality, reliability, and system stability
- Align engineering work with Mercury's values and long-term strategy
- Partner closely with product and design to identify and prioritize high-impact work
- Collaborate across teams to build cohesive products and simpler, more maintainable systems
- Balance new development with ongoing maintenance and operational excellence
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams at multiple organizations
- Experience operating in high-responsibility/high-impact domains
- Comfortable with ambiguity and growing scope
- Track record of leading through cross-functional and cross-team coordination
- Strong technical judgment and credibility
- Familiarity with Haskell or excitement to learn it
- Experience in finance, fintech, or banking systems (payments experience a plus)
- Ability to drive predictable execution against company and product goals
- Strong leadership and communication skills

- Knowledge of payment systems and regulations
