About the Role
As a Senior Engineering Manager at refurbed, you will be responsible for leading the Platform and Data Engineering teams, providing the technical foundation for product teams to build upon. This role is crucial in ensuring the stability, scalability, and ease of use of the platform, and requires a deep understanding of cloud infrastructure, data engineering fundamentals, and leadership principles. You will be working closely with product managers and engineering leaders to evolve the Platform and Data Engineering teams as products, and will be responsible for establishing feedback loops and metrics to measure success.The Platform and Data Engineering teams play a critical supporting role in enabling the product teams to multiply their effectiveness, and your leadership will be key in driving this success. With a strong background in cloud infrastructure, ideally GCP, and experience designing and operating Kubernetes-based environments, you will be well-equipped to guide the teams towards sound technical decisions.
What You Will Do
- Lead the Platform and Data Engineering teams, providing technical guidance and oversight
- Develop, mentor, and retain engineering talent, and manage performance with clarity and empathy
- Partner with product managers and engineering leaders to evolve Platform and Data Engineering as products
- Establish feedback loops and metrics to understand developer experience, delivery friction, and engineering effectiveness
- Ensure the technical foundation is stable, scalable, and easy to work with
- Collaborate with other engineering teams to ensure alignment and effective communication
- Own the technical vision and strategy for the Platform and Data Engineering teams
- Guide trade-off discussions around reliability, cost, and performance
- Review and provide feedback on high-level designs and architecture
What We Are Looking For
- 8+ years of experience managing engineers in platform, infrastructure, or data teams
- Strong background in cloud infrastructure, ideally GCP, but AWS or Azure also relevant
- Experience designing and operating Kubernetes-based environments, including CI/CD pipelines, secrets management, and observability stacks
- Understanding of data engineering fundamentals: pipeline design, data warehouse modeling, transformation tooling, and data quality practices
- Solid understanding of backend systems, distributed architectures, and how scalable services are designed
- Experience with SQL, relational database concepts, and modern backend development practices
- Proven ability to develop, mentor, and retain engineering talent
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to lead with low ego, openness, and a belief in autonomy and empowerment
Nice to Have
- Experience with specific tools and technologies, such as Go, gRPC, PostgreSQL, Redis, and RabbitMQ
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and participation in architecture reviews
- Understanding of data platforms built with Python on top of BigQuery
- Experience with Agile development methodologies and version control systems like Git
