About the Role

The Senior Engineering Manager position at Instacart is a pivotal role that oversees the technical direction and development of the Retailer Platform. This platform is central to Instacart's ability to scale its services across the globe's largest grocers, integrating omnichannel services such as FoodStorm catering and Caper Carts onto unified platform rails. The role involves setting the technical vision for a team of approximately 12 engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement, and ensuring that the team's work aligns with Instacart's broader strategic goals.

As part of Instacart's Enterprise Foundations team, this role is crucial in driving the company's expansion into new international markets and enhancing its service offerings to enterprise retailers. The Senior Engineering Manager will work closely with various teams, including Connected Stores, Pro Services, Commerce, Data Engineering, and ML, to broker architectural and prioritization trade-offs that determine how Instacart serves its retail partners.

What You Will Do

  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of engineers, focusing on developing talent and fostering a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Set and maintain the unifying technical thesis for the team, ensuring convergence on shared solutions.
  • Drive the consolidation of bespoke services onto unified Instacart platform rails.
  • Partner with ML and Data Engineering teams to ensure enterprise data platform compliance for ML systems.
  • Deliver self-service tooling to reduce engineering bottlenecks.
  • Represent technical and product trade-offs across multiple organizations.
  • Broker resourcing decisions and drive clarity in ambiguous scope.
  • Ensure engineering investment aligns with committed work.

What We Are Looking For

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in software engineering management or a related field.
  • Strong background in software development, with expertise in areas such as multi-tenancy, data isolation, and configuration-driven release management.
  • Experience in leading teams of senior engineers and driving technical direction.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of architectural trade-offs and the ability to make informed technical decisions.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
