About the Role
The Senior Engineering Manager position at Wikimedia Enterprise is a unique opportunity to lead the technical roadmap for a cutting-edge data ingestion platform. As a key member of the Wikimedia Foundation, you will be responsible for driving the development of fast, comprehensive, and secure data feeds for high-volume reusers. This role entails working closely with cross-functional teams, including product and sales, to define the long-term strategy for Wikimedia Enterprise and support the financial sustainability of the Wikimedia movement.The Wikimedia Enterprise team is a distributed and diverse group of engineers who prioritize exploration, experimentation, and innovation. What You Will Do
- Foster a supportive team environment, ensuring diverse voices are heard and team members feel empowered to lead
- Guide team members with structured development techniques
- Coach engineers in the art and science of software engineering and evolvable software architecture
- Own technical decisions and work closely with the team to find best solutions to hard problems
- Lead conversations about long-term technical strategy of the Wikimedia Enterprise team, with an understanding of the principles of the movement
- Be a strong voice, leader, and collaborator on team activities, including code reviews, ceremonies, and work allocation
- Participate in hiring, considering diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Partner with peers on cross-team delivery and radiate organizational updates
- Facilitate product technical strategy and roadmap setting with software engineers and technical product management
- Supervise budget and staffing
What We Are Looking For
- Expertise in B2B environments that require high and unpredictable scale
- History of developing high-productivity engineering teams working on challenging problems
- Expertise managing teams with tight SLAs behind their work
- Experience in supporting complex web applications running on Amazon Web Services or other comparable cloud platforms
- Experience working with Kafka or similar distributed event processing systems
- Experience working with Node.js, Go, and PHP applications
- Comfortable with configuration management and orchestration tools (ECS, Kubernetes) and modern observability infrastructure
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles and evolvable software architecture
Nice to Have
- Experience with containerization using Docker
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies
- Experience with DevOps practices and tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD
